Carney still fascinating. Cuts net immigration to zero, announces 10% reduction in federal civil service, 1.2GW data center, cuts to cap gains and corporate tax, privatize airports, govt rapid support of fossil fuel extraction. Result: *massive* popularity incl. amomg left! 1/2

It's kinda wild that someone invented an ideology around having correct instead of incorrect beliefs and that was enough for its splinter groups to take over the economy within 20 years

Old dying people are usually delirious too.
Thankfully, the thoughts of wise 40 somethings who are confronted by their own mortality have been documented in the cultural concept of ‘mid life crisis’ and the #1 regret seems to be “I wish I had bought that convertible”

If we removed the inward transfers to much of the UK and watched the subsequent spending dissolve (the taxi firm driving kids to school, the paper towel supplier to the NHS, the lawyers and accountants to both) we'd see that much of our country has surprisingly little economy.

Timely reminder given today's election results:
Orban's authoritarian government utterly failed to deliver on growth and Hungary ended up being the poorest country in the EU by the end of his tenure.
This is extremely embarrassing given their starting position.

Imagine if we set up a cash benefit that payed 3 times more in London than Birmingham, that was then only awarded to lucky subset of those eligible, and came with lifetime lock in and an optional asset windfall. It would go against every notion of good policy design and yet

I disagree. There’s been a large upward revision in ONS emigration figures, and the issue itself has been underrated by the electorate and press since the 80s.
Current *net* emigration of 127,000/year of British nationals aged between 16-44 is 30% (!) of the number of births in England and Wales to parents with at least one British citizen parent.
Given the play that the fertility crisis, dependency ratios, etc. get, it’s odd to not care about a fiscally significant outflow of (disproportionately functional) working age people

There’s also a twist in Britain where “In this limited case we should divert away from economic maximisation/markets for [moral value]” has won so much for so long that it’s hard to fit any more moral obligations in without damaging productive capacity.
This is made worse by these moral obligations’ effects multiplying together in a non-linear way. Think of how ‘moral’ planning law (giving local control) makes ‘moral’ migration ideas (increasing numbers) negatives of higher housing prices far worse than either would be in a vacuum. Tax similarly works like this, energy costs too, and many more.

New: No10 confirm welfare package changes after Starmer personally bartered with Labour MPs
- all people on PIP stay on current system
- new criteria from 2026 for new claims only
-all existing recipients of the UC health element – and any new claimant meeting the severe conditions criteria – have their incomes fully protected
- ministerial review of the PIP assessment, led by the Minister for Social Security and Disability
- bringing fwd date of additional funding
Liz Kendall says in letter to MPs that it's a fair package which preserves the system for all
No10 spox says
“We have listened to MPs who support the principle of reform but are worried about the pace of change for those already supported by the system.
“This package will preserve the social security system for those who need it by putting it on a sustainable footing, provide dignity for those unable to work, supports those who can and reduce anxiety for those currently in the system.
“Our reforms are underpinned by Labour values and our determination to deliver the change the country voted for last year."

Re: the train stabbing video, it occurred to me that none of my friends, school friends, family, extended family, or even the very reaches of my historically traceable family has *ever* committed a violent crime.
I have no model for violent people, they are completely alien.

It would be more accurate if instead of stat duties we understood them as 'unfunded mandates'. Consensus in political science is that forcing lower tiers of gov to do things w/o providing funding is terrible for outcomes and growth, but GB governance is now just overrun by this.
