ILLINOIS: East Aurora school board president Annette Johnson is federally charged with steering a $2.7M air purifier contract, paid with pandemic relief money, to a reseller.
Prosecutors say Johnson used her position as board president to steer a $2.7 million air purifier contract to a reseller, speaking in favor of the purchase and voting to approve it. The money came from federal pandemic relief funds meant for schools. After the district paid the reseller, a $1.3 million check labeled as "commission" went to a company where Johnson worked as chief financial officer.
Per the indictment, that $1.3 million went to the owner of a company who was in a romantic relationship with Johnson while she was board president, and she had a financial interest in the deal.
llinois gets an "F" for its finances.
Chicago's combined state and city taxpayer burden: $79,500.

Illinois tax dollars and political activism. Where should the line be drawn?
Arab American Family Services (AAFS), a nonprofit participating in protests outside Medinah Country Club during President Trump's visit, has also received millions in Illinois taxpayer funding.
According to the figures compiled, AAFS received $8.33 million from Illinois taxpayers over eight years. In 2024 alone, it received $2.1 million in government funding, representing roughly 32% of its $6.53 million in total revenue.
And Illinois budget documents continue to include multiple grant appropriations for AAFS.
The question isn't whether a nonprofit has the right to engage in political advocacy.
The question is: How much taxpayer funding should an organization receive while also engaging in partisan political activism?
Illinois taxpayers deserve transparency about where their money goes and what organizations receiving millions in public funds are doing.

Protesting Trump outside Medinah Country Club is Arab American Family Services, a non-profit raking it in from taxpayers.
In the last eight years AAFS has received $8,330,409 from Illinois taxpayers. In 2024, they received $2,614,756 which was 41% of their total revenues. Their IRS Form 990 from that year showed total revenue of $6,344,756.
They were given the money for a Welcoming Center, Partner Abuse Intervention Program and Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program. Their Form 990 states their purpose as "ARAB AMERICAN FAMILY SERVICES IS A MULTI-SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO EMPOWERING AND ENHANCING THE LIVES OF ARAB AMERICANS BY PROVIDING THEM WITH EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND SERVICES."
So educational services means not teaching them to beat their wife and kids, I guess.
In 2024, the Executive Director, ITEDAL SHALABI, paid himself $176,172 - according to the Form 990 published by ProPublica.
AAFS is not a service organization. It is a progressive anti-American activist organization and they should be investigated for misuse of taxpayer money.
