Lots of debate this week on whether journals should ban AI in peer review. We actually tested this in our new preprint, and the results were pretty clear to me. For context, I've reviewed for most of the big journals and evaluated 1,000 human reviews as an editor. I love to read and evaluate science. TLDR: From now on I won't do any peer review without AI. For clinical trials, I'd even call human-only review dangerous 🧵

It’s getting worse and worse. New study shows experts completely surrender their judgments to AI, and they don’t even realise it. Fifty professional analysts used Claude Code to analyse data and advise a fictional farming cooperative. They faced four analytical decisions, followed by a final policy recommendation. Unknown to them, AI advice was experimentally manipulated to lean towards opposite directions. The results are disturbing. Across the four analytical decisions, experts chose the AI’s preferred option 86% of the time. Afterwards, half of the experts rated the final recommendation as more their own than the AI’s, and only 15% mentioned the AI in any explanation. Epistemia is reaching the experts: we risk outsourcing judgment while preserving the illusion of intellectual independence. What could possibly go wrong? * Paper in the first reply

FYI….
A 20-year study of a million children found that kids conceived by IVF frozen embryo transfer had double the cancer rate. 84% of US IVF transfers now use frozen embryos. Danish researchers followed every child born in Denmark from 1996 to 2012 for up to 20 years. The study was published in JAMA last week. Children conceived without assisted reproduction developed cancer at 18.3 per 100,000 per year. After frozen embryo transfer, the rate was 41.1. After ICSI, where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg, it was 27.9. After frozen transfer, leukemia ran more than twice as high. The only method that showed no increase was a fresh embryo, never frozen, created by placing eggs and sperm together in a dish. That version is now the exception. In 2021, 84% of US IVF transfers used frozen embryos and 78% used ICSI, according to the CDC. Compared with children of women with a history of infertility who conceived without treatment, the frozen embryo risk stayed at more than double. In the authors' words, the results suggest "procedure-related, rather than infertility-related, factors." This is not the first time the pattern has shown up. A 2019 JAMA study of the same Danish children at 11 years found it too. A 2022 study of 2.3 million children in Taiwan found those conceived through assisted reproduction had 58% higher cancer risk, "mainly owing to leukemia and hepatic tumor." The absolute risk is small, and most of these children will never get cancer. The Danish children were conceived with older freezing methods, and the authors warn the results "may differ for contemporary protocols." Nobody yet has long-term data on IVF as it is done today. Children conceived with today's methods won't have 20 years of data until the 2040s, so today's IVF children are, in effect, the trial. Parents deserve to hear these numbers before they sign the consent form, because their child is the one who will carry the risk. doi.org/10.1001/jama.2026.18…

One thing is to see economic growth from afar, when countries are statistics. Another is to see it in the field, when you visit a high-growth economy amidst a period of intense structural transformation. This trip to Indonesia has been a great reminder that economic growth is not an abstract phenomenon, but a heartfelt reality filled with teamwork and dedication. I landed in Jakarta on Saturday night and since then I completed teaching an executive certificate on economic complexity and innovation policy to 42 enthusiastic professionals. I also had a chance to keynote Danantara’s tech forum, a big stage event organized by the organization coordinating all of the country’s SOEs. Thanks to @erwinaksa_id and the team at @Kadin_Indonesia for opening the doors to this wonderful country.

🚨 PANIC IN THE SURROGACY MARKET IN COLOMBIA? AMAZING NEWS !!!! In a Facebook surrogacy group, prospective fathers are being warned that Colombia’s proposed BAN could mean criminal prosecution, prison sentences and blocked surrogacy arrangements. And the proposed solution? Take your business to Cyprus. Not one word about the women. Not one word about the children. Just fear of losing access to the market.

Sadly this is completely unsurprising. Meta has executed a “merchants of doubt” campaign against the reputation of people calling out the toxicity of their products for a long time. @JonHaidt is a true hero who has done more than almost anyone else to affect global norms and policy to protect children’s developing minds from social media and screens with #TheAnxiousGeneration
Meta had an internal PR plan to try and discredit Jon Haidt because he was a critic of social media. Meta was going to recruit academics, like Andrew Gelman, to write take down pieces. They were trying to turn academics against one another through a "whisper strategy". This is a very serious problem for open academic debate. If academics who share negative evidence about a platform are targeted by campaigns to smear our credibility, we are in deep, deep trouble. This creates a very serious conflict of interest for anyone who is paid to do this. law360.com/articles/2542517/…

Many Lula supporters say they want Brazil to adopt China's economic model. To achieve that, Brazil would need to cut social spending and pensions by 50% and cut government spending by 30%. It would need someone much more right-wing than Bolsonaro on economics.
Many working class Trump supporters are fine with the US being poorer in return for 'America First'. In 2025, it was tariffs induced CPI and stock market crash. In 2026, Iran war induced fuel price surge. Many Lula supporters share the same ethos. They value geopolitical sovereignty and don't want to be an 'American colony'. They are fine with being nominally 'poorer'. In this sense, both blue collar Trump supporter and Lula value national dignity more than 'GDP per capita'. What the MAGA interviewer does here is similar to what zionist media in the US do to blue collar MAGA voters - select the most bad optics character to discredit the movement. But notice the Lula supporter at 15:35 - he was trying to explain to the interviewer that he rejects liberalism and wants to try Chinese style state capitalism, not soviet style Communism. The interviewer was only interested in getting the 'so you support Communism?' soundbite. Besides, I don't think he understands what state capitalism is anyway. My personal opinion if I was Brazilian? I would support Bolsonaro on most issues but Lula geopolitically.
