JEWISH COMMUNITY GROUPS WELCOME ONTARIO ACTION TO HOLD UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES ACCOUNTABLE In response to the Government of Ontario’s announcement of new directives to strengthen accountability at Ontario universities under Bill 166, @HillelOntario , the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), the @CanadianFSWC , @UJAFederation , the Network of Engaged Canadian Academics, @AlliedVoicesIL , and @StandWithUsCA released the following joint statement: “The Ontario government has introduced new requirements to strengthen how colleges and universities respond to hate and discrimination on campus — including minimum requirements for policies and rules, clearer complaint processes including ensuring that regardless where complaints are submitted they are referred through the complaint’s mechanism process, anti-hate training, and new consequences for institutions that fail to comply. "At Toronto Metropolitan University, Justice Benotto found that existing policies were too often not enforced “consistently and decisively.” These new measures reinforce a simple principle: institutions must not only have rules, they must enforce them. "We have consistently called for stronger accountability and meaningful consequences when institutions fail to protect students or enforce their own policies. "As Jewish students face harassment, exclusion and discrimination on campuses across Ontario, including through antizionist behaviour, policies cannot exist only on paper. Institutions must act — and there must be consequences when they fail to do so. "This is an important step forward by the Ontario government toward ensuring universities are accountable for providing safe and welcoming campuses for all students and staff." Thank you to the @CanadianFSWC for tonight’s Voices of Change conversation. A thoughtful evening on hard questions. How we confront antisemitism. How we keep faith with the values that have made Toronto a home for people from every corner of the globe. Grateful for the work this organization does, and for the chance to listen and learn.

Today, I was proud to join Premier @FordNation, and colleagues from our @OntarioPCCaucus, at the @CanadianFSWC reception here at Queen’s Park.   I want to recognize the important work that FSWC does in education and advocacy to ensure the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten.   But remembrance alone is not enough.   At a time when antisemitism is rising at an alarming rate — we must stand together and say: #neveragain. We must call out antisemitism wherever it appears. An attack on one, is an attack on all.

This #YomHaShoah, we solemnly remember the six million Jewish men, women, and children murdered in the Holocaust at the hands of unchecked evil. For every survivor and for every victim and their families, we commit to #NeverAgain be a bystander against antisemitic hate. Thank you @CanadianFSWC for a moving reception at Queen’s Park with @fordnation, colleagues, and friends.

An Al-Quds Day march expected in Toronto this weekend, alongside others planned across Canada, is profoundly disturbing. These rallies have historically featured banners of Ayatollah Khamenei and chants calling for “intifada,” along with calls for death to the United States and Israel. If that unfolds in our city, it will be a shameful stain on Toronto and on our country. The threat environment in our city is already serious. In recent days, gunfire has targeted synagogues, Jewish-owned businesses and the U.S. consulate in Toronto. Jewish and Iranian communities remain under threat. At the same time, the Iranian regime and its terrorist proxies continue to issue explicit threats against Israel, the United States and the West. Authorities in London have banned this year’s Al-Quds march over public safety concerns. Against this backdrop, demonstrations in Canada that glorify the leadership of the Iranian regime and amplify violent rhetoric should alarm every Canadian. If any leader in a position of authority is prepared to step up and act to protect public safety and social cohesion, now is the time. Hate and incitement have no place on our streets or anywhere in our country.

Yesterday I stood with community leaders, elected officials and law enforcement at Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue following the recent shootings targeting Jewish places of worship and businesses in Toronto. A dangerous line has been crossed in Canada. Jews should not have to question whether it is safe to attend synagogue, run our businesses, send our children to school, or live our daily lives as Jews. An attack on Jews in Canada is also an attack on the values that hold this country together, the basic social contract that guarantees every Canadian the right to live in safety and dignity, no matter their background. Prime Minister @MarkJCarney, I urge you to direct a coordinated national response. The time for reassurances has passed.

Two more synagogues were shot at overnight in the GTA. Shaarei Shomayim in Toronto. The BAYT in Thornhill. On the Jewish Sabbath. As a Canadian Jew, I feel anger and dread. Antisemitic violence is escalating in real time, and tragically it’s becoming normalized. Gunfire at synagogues should shake this country to its core. Instead, it risks becoming just another headline. Canada’s leaders must confront this with urgency. Tragically, we all know where this road leads. Bondi Beach.

The Iranian regime is an existential threat, to its own people, to Israel, and to global security. It represses brave Iranians at home, fuels terror across the Middle East and around the world, and has spent decades pursuing nuclear weapons. I stand with the people of Iran, and with hope for a future where they live in freedom and dignity, and where the shadow of this regime’s terror no longer hangs over Israel and the region.

Targeting Jewish camps with falsehoods and antisemitic tropes is reckless and dangerous. Camps build identity and pride in Jewish life. Smearing that as extremism fuels hostility toward Jewish children and families. I stand with OCA and the camps being targeted. Jewish kids deserve safety, not intimidation.

Regardless of how Parliament resolves any one suggested amendment to Bill C-9, the serious threats to the Jewish community remain the same and our expectations for government action have not changed. We're proud to join with four other Jewish community organizations to call for the advancement of core provisions of the bill that would enhance the existing laws and provide additional tools for law enforcement and prosecutors to utilize to keep our communities safe. It was truly an honour to stand alongside six fellow allies at the @CanadianFSWC Spirit of Hope dinner. In a time of rising division, standing together in truth and respect matters more than ever. The evening’s speakers and guests were a powerful reminder that our love for this country - and our commitment to the safety and security of everyone within it - must always transcend politics. Choosing to promote light and love as darkness encroaches is an act of shared humanity. 💙
