It's an expression of the same destructively controlling impulse - and flat unwillingness to hear "no" - that we see played out when men murder women who have rejected them.

A new law that risks criminalising parents who question whether their children are trans must be scrapped, MPs, peers and experts have demanded.
‘Gender’, as opposed to sex, is an anti-scientific myth. If a child with a penis announces that he is really a girl, parents and teachers have a positive duty to educate him in the scientific truth that he is a boy.
Of course no parent should use physical or psychological abuse for any reason. But if anyone should be prosecuted it is those who abuse their duty of care by encouraging children in the anti-scientific delusion that they can choose their own sex.

I'm baffled that the Government line on the #ConversionBill is "This draft bill targets a specific form of abuse, it does not touch regular parenting".
Where, please, is the "regular parenting" carve-out?
Where is the "specific form of abuse"?

I’ve never told any trans person what they ‘should be.’ As far as I’m concerned, trans people can call themselves whatever they like and believe whatever they like about themselves. What trans people aren’t entitled to is universal agreement that they’ve changed sex, acclaim for their embodiment of sex stereotypes, the reconfiguration of laws around an objective untruth or women’s surrender of their sex-based rights.

It also seems unlikely that a campaign group wanting to have a policy discussion without heat would have petitioned the United Nations to remove the standing of the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission.
A lot of us were very willing to have a debate without heat, @stonewalluk, and the reason that never happened wasn't because gender critical feminists didn't want one.
While we were trying to get you to listen to our concerns, your former CEO was telling a BBC boss that gay people not wanting to include the opposite sex in their dating pool was 'sexual racism'. While we were pointing out the homophobia inherent in gender ideology, Stonewall ambassador Alex Drummond (a bearded, heterosexual man who'd had no surgery and taken no cross-sex hormones but liked wearing skirts), was going into schools to talk to students about his 'lesbian' identity. @BluskyeAllison, who actually is a lesbian, was subject to unlawful discrimination at her place of work for tweeting: ‘Stonewall recently hired Morgan Page, a male bodied person who ran workshops with the sole aim of coaching heterosexual men who identify as lesbians on how they can coerce young lesbians into having sex with them. Page called [it] “overcoming the cotton ceiling”.’
When the UK Supreme Court upheld women's right to single sex spaces, you issued a statement expressing your unhappiness about the ruling. In her report on your unhappy influence at the University of Essex, you were found by barrister @akuareindorf to have misrepresented the law as it related to women's rights: '[Stonewall have] stated the law as Stonewall would prefer it to be, rather than the law as it is’.
In 2018, you publicly advised schools to shred a research pack saying there were risks to puberty blockers, in spite of the fact that you aren't a medical charity and that there was already credible evidence that puberty blockers are neither irreversible nor harm-free. Meanwhile you produced your own educational packs, recommending a children's book, for ages 5-9, in which the parent 'is neither a man, nor a woman – they’re non-binary.' In July 2022, Stonewall sent out a tweet that read ‘Research suggests that children as young as two recognise their trans identity'.
@thetimes has reported how you've sought to control the language used by NHS trusts and government on their social-media accounts. Organisations would get points from you for replacing commonly understood words with ideologically approved terms, eg, 'birthing parent' instead of 'mother'. thetimes.com/uk/society/arti…
In short, you took a maximalist position on gender identity ideology, which you attempted to enforce by diktat. You refused to acknowledge that you'd hitched your wagon to a cause that, unlike civil rights, gay rights or women's rights, sought to strip rights from others. You sought to curtail everyone's right to freedom of speech and belief by controlling what it was permissible to think and say, through the management and political class. You have argued against women's and girl's rights to their own spaces, their sports and to assemble without men. Your former CEO tried to shame gay women/men into dating the opposite sex if the latter claimed to be female/male.
Your mantra was 'no debate' because, like all totalitarians, you preferred slogans, bullying and infiltration of powerful institutions to talking to opponents. You appear to have had no concern for the lowly people your ideology was harming: gender confused kids, female rape victims, female prisoners, regular people hounded and investigated at their places of work for refusing to accept the new mandates on sex and gender issued from on high.
Your 'activism' has been a disaster for those trans-identified people who really do just want to get on with their lives in peace. You have besmirched the name of an organisation many of us were once proud to donate to, the charity that was partly responsible for securing the legal right of gay people to marry, which a lot of us thought would never happen in our lifetimes. The milquetoast words quoted below do not erase a decade of gender activism that has been disastrous not only for individuals but for society as a whole.
There was once a debate to be had, but until you acknowledge the direct harm you've caused, it is no more possible to debate you than to persuade a person in the throes of a drug-induced psychosis that they are not, in fact, the reincarnated Christ.

But she's far too scary for @BBCWomansHour which has shadow banned her

This from Dennis is particularly brilliant. He was asked a leading question about how much conversion therapy is out there, and he turned it incredibly effectively to the post-modern "conversion therapy" that is gender medicine. There is definitely a lot of "reparative therapy" out there - and it's done by the gender clinicians who put gay teenagers on the path to chemical and/or physical castration. The framing the question suggested was that this bill is addressing a serious, existing harm, albeit perhaps the bill needs some safeguards to stop overreach. Dennis moved back onto his own framing, showing that there is a genuine, serious problem with conversion therapy, but it's not where the panel committee think it is, and this bill will make it worse.
The Conversion Practices bill “makes it a crime to say to your teenaged daughter:
I want you to love your body,
I want you to grow up to be a happy lesbian.
I DO NOT BELIEVE YOU ARE A MAN!”

My late grandmother, when her dementia was advanced, lost all sense of her lesbianism.
She remembered being married to my granddad (she always had some choice words to share about the marriage), but she had no memory whatsever of her long-term lesbian partner or the lesbian relationships she had in her 60s and early 70s.
And, when I talked to her about her being a lesbian, her responses ranged from laughing at the idea to getting very cross with me about it. So, obviously, I stopped raising it.
I keep thinking back to those conversations I had with her in the later stages of her life, in light of the Conversion Practices Draft Bill's wording that a conversion practice is conduct with the intention of causing an individual (i) to have or not to have, or
(ii) to believe that they have or do not have a sexual orientation or a particular sexual orientation."
Was talking to my nan about her lesbianism a conversion practice in this sense?
Or was my nan still a lesbian behind the dementia and, if so, was it a potential conversion practice when people made comments to my nan that assumed she was heterosexual and that she was interested in a guy who lived a few doors down.
A lot is said about the nebulous nature of the term "transgender identity" in the Bill, and yes, that is a complete mess.
However, I am not all that sure that sexual orientation is always clear. These things are often much more fluid and blurry than we imagine, especially during teenage or dementia-affected years.
This is perhaps fine, or at least workable, in areas of civil law, such as discrimination law. But to attach criminal law penalties, of up to 5 years in prison, to concepts that are fluid and blurry...blimey, we have to be very sure we know what we're doing with that before we go anywhere near it.

It’s seriously wild that Parliament has heard detailed statements on, amongst other things: the Holocaust, the Omagh bombing, Hillsborough, Aberfan, & the 7/7 terrorist attacks.
But the only time in 200 years they’ve needed a trigger warning was @Jebadoo2 pitching up to tell them it was wrong to sterilise autistic gay teenagers.

I want you all to know this.
There are 650 MPs in Parliament. Yet the one MP chosen by @UKLabour to Chair the Bill Committee for the controversial, dangerous and dismally bad draft legislation, the Conversion Practices Bill, is Alex Barros-Curtis. Until July 2024, when Alex was given a very safe Labour seat in Cardiff, he was the Head of the Labour Party's Governance and Legal Unit in London. This was a department set up to investigate complaints against members of the Labour Party. Complaints of antisemitism, Islamophobia, abuse, and of course latterly, mostly women holding legally-protected 'Gender Critical' (sex realist) beliefs. Alex oversaw the investigation of hundreds of members who liked or tweeted gender critical or feminist views. I was one of them. He investigated me, as a sitting Labour MP, for 13 months.
13 months to 'investigate' one like of one tweet. I had a great lawyer, one of the names we're all now familiar with, and I had to crowdfund to pay for his (excellent) work.
They first tried in 2020. But the screenshots crudely attached to that passive aggressive, threatening-sounding email from LP admin staff were so risible that I replied that it was too ridiculous for me to waste my precious time on. They left it. Years of Starmer bumbling and stuttering through interviews about whether he had spoken to me, whether he supported me, etc followed. My feminist sins continued apace.
And then I 'liked' a tweet by my GC comedian friend @Glinner. He had mocked Eddie'Suzy' for comparing his choice to wear traditional women's clothing, fake plastic breasts and nails, to those being persecuted by the Nazis during WWII. I found his sarcasm, as a award-winning comedy writer in the face of such offensive narcissism amusing and so 'liked' it. I found it absurd and obscene that Izzard, an extremely privileged and wealthy man, who openly changed his 'gender' at will, should write himself into history falseley as someone who would have been oppressed due to a circumstance beyond his control. We all know the groups who were tortured, starved and killed...
There is obviously more to my story, I will tell it all, it's just one chapter of the years of spiteful abusive and bullying practices meted out to me by the Labour Party managers. Not those who'd achieved office on merit, or even unexpectedly, but those in the club, often having failed to be elected themselves.
So Barros-Curtis who we were repeatedly told led 'the many *independent* inquiries into women members and MPs like me, now often stands as a trans-rights activist on the Labour backbenches. He has also been gifted the role of Chair of this Committee and is a huge supporter of this Bill. And I am not a part of the Bill Committee, although plenty of TRA MPs are. Does that sound like the democratic scrutiny of legislation to you?

This statement by @oliviabaileymp is a mess. The Conversion Practices Bill is amply capable of criminalising normal parenting. There's no "abuse threshold" at all - "abusiveness" is expressly a question of fact for the court/jury.
This was from back in June on the Conversion Practices Bill. There was only a handful of us raising concerns.
I remember being staggered at the time how clear it was that the Minister hadn’t read or understood her own bill. And she didn’t even attempt to answer the question on whether a parent withholding consent for a child to participate in the puberty blocker trial could be at risk of 5 years in prison.
This Minister is now the Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee.

Reasonable people can disagree about sex-based rights. But it is not reasonable to deny the reality of sex or distort the language that describes it (male and female, and man and woman for sexually mature members of our species). It prevents productive communication across disagreement, and results in this kind of ridiculousness. 👇🏽 And I fail to see how it helps trans people.
