Despite orders yesterday from the NYS DEC to cease work on this Upper West Side water tank, several workers appeared earlier today and lifted this wood panel onto the top of the tank and did other work. The DEC is here again.

What began with residents speaking up in 2023 is now a model for community-centered development: 60 preserved affordable homes for New Yorkers transitioning from shelter, and 10 more existing households remain. Safe, sustainable housing starts with listening.

#OTD in 1867, Ed Delahanty was born in Cleveland, OH. Perhaps the most feared slugger of the 19th century, today he’s known by a relative few. Here’s an unfinished painting of him with the Senators in 1903, depicted only weeks before his tragic death. Gotta get back to this!!

This is a no brainer, and yet somehow there’s NYers who think we shouldn’t keep expanding transit options. And we’d get a park, too. It’s both and, not park only.
QUEENSLINK vs. QUEENSWAY. NYC is about to make a decision it may NEVER be able to undo.
@thequeenslink would restore subway service along an abandoned rail corridor in Queens while ALSO creating a new linear park.
QueensWay would turn the corridor into a park WITHOUT the subway.
@NYCMayor favors QueensWay, and the city is moving forward with the park proposal.
This could be a MASSIVE missed opportunity. Once the corridor becomes a park, restoring rail could become politically IRREVERSIBLE.
Why not have BOTH transit AND green space?
NYC, which would you choose?

Patrick Stewart once found himself joking with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr about being three knights at the same table. No grand speech, no performance. Just a moment of shared laughter.
A long career leaves behind more than great roles. It leaves moments people remember.

#OTD in 1916, Leon Day was born in Alexandria, VA. Though he was an incredible pitcher, he also played the infield and outfield on off-days. He was considered to be Satchel Paige’s equal on the mound. Here’s my painting of him with the Newark Eagles in the early ‘40s.

“a particularly notable drop in public-school enrollment as students transition from elementary to middle school”
Today my office has released a major new report on student enrollment in NYC.
We found that k-12 enrollment in our public schools has fallen by 187k since 2013, with a projected decline of an additional 128k students by 2034.
As total enrollment declines, NYCPS is serving a student population with growing needs. The number of students with disabilities is increasing. In the most recent school year, approximately 73% of students were in poverty and 14% were homeless or living in temporary housing.
Our report finds the drop in enrollment is driven by declining births and families with children leaving NYC, with a particularly notable drop in public-school enrollment as students transition from elementary to middle school.
These trends have massive implications for our schools that we have only barely begin to grapple with. My hope is that this report will spur a long overdue conversation about what the era of falling student enrollment means for NYC, and what we can do to reverse or slow it. 🧵

He’ll never know this but Patrick Stewart showed countless boys how to be men. He showed that strength didn't have to mean intimidation, that intelligence should come with humility, and that you could - and should - stand up for what was right even when it cost you something.

Patrick Stewart on Trump (2017): “You might say to me, well, you’re not an American, what has it got to do with you? The fact is when America sneezes, the world catches a cold. America I think is on the edge of a very bad flu infection and it’s because of the man who’s in the White House”

This is a magical family of birds that have captivated Manhattanites for weeks.
I am outraged by the callous disregard of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
Given the vulnerability of the fledglings, I’ve urged @NYSDEC and the Mayor’s Office of Animal Welfare to consult with @nyrr about whether tomorrow’s planned drone light show in Central Park should proceed, given the risk of further disturbing the birds.
Thank you to @nycbirdalliance & @NYSDEC for their swift action to protect these precious creatures.

My favorite performance of Patrick Stewart was in the TNG episode "Tapestry".
There are some days I look back to this episode for a reminder of overcoming difficulties and harsh truths.
I used to beat myself up over bad choices I had made and bad people I associated with. Led me into to conflicts, ruination, and at worst: homelessness.
But those were the things that made me into who I was. A lot of people just give up. They might lose their mind or spirit along the way. But you can't ever give those up -they're all you really have.
That almost sounds like it could be a cope, but in many cases, that's just how it goes. You have to live to know.
