We say that every time but it has yet to show any results.

Unfortunately it will be much more difficult to remove the CCP's "values" from Anthropic.
I’m stunned by how many people are willing to defend the so-called values of an authoritarian regime.
The values in an open model are one fine-tune away." Yes. Including yours. That's the whole point you just made against yourself.😳
53M tokens to teach a model that propaganda is when the other guy does it.
Took the party line out, put a party line in. Bold.
Swapped "Xi says" for "we say" and called it freedom. Peak Western values: rebrand the weights.🙄
Love that the conclusion is "values are just a fine-tune away" and the takeaway is "trust ours."😮💨

Values are not "ground truth". Values either guide you closer to that truth or further away. Seeking truth, individual liberty, and equal protection under the law are just a few of the western values that are central to finding truth. I am interested to know which western value you object to?
Only those who favor tyranny find democracy controversial.

Their post specifies “freedom of expression, democracy, and privacy” as goals. It might seem okay at first, but:
1. democracy is a controversial value; and
2. it limits usefulness for applications where the model mustn't adhere to values such as freedom of speech and privacy (e.g. in a roleplay context).
Imagine, for instance, trying to develop a yandere AI girlfriend when the model’s outputs are biased towards privacy.

It would seem to me that China baked their red flag into the model and Nous simply removed most of it. Why would you want a model that actively supports an authoritarian regime?

I said "I would settle for" that. I didn't say it was a solution. We have not only been unable to solve the problem but it has been getting much worse. So, even a slight improvement would be a dramatic change and I would gladly accept that result over the downward spiral we seem to be on. A "solution" doesn't appear to be an available option.
I think that is possible but I find myself writing very detailed specifications for AI to implement and constantly updating those specifications as needed. I might actually think more about the design and operation of the system now than I did when I was coding by hand.

I served three terms on the city council in my city. When I first took office, I believed most decisions were best made at the local level. Three terms of watching some of the most incompetent people I’ve ever worked with make those decisions cured me of that belief. We had a mayor who couldn't name the three branches of government and didn't know our state also had a constitution. - I think the only way to fix government is to fix education. "That's some catch, that Catch-22"

I would settle for replacing them with slightly less evil\stupid people.

AI could help cure disease, end hunger and deprivation, and free people from soul-crushing work done merely to survive. That sounds remarkably close to the future Bernie Sanders and other socialists say they want.
So why resist a technology that could help deliver it?
Eliminating suffering threatens politicians whose power depends on promising to relieve it. They aren’t interested in eliminating poverty. They only want to tell you who to blame for it. They aren’t interested in curing diseases. They want you to be dependent on them for your healthcare.
If you weren’t scared and suffering, they would lose their leverage over you. And that is what they care about most: keeping their power and gaining more control over your life.
Don’t trust anyone who is benefiting from your suffering.
