Watching the US election results is like watching a car accident from the side of the road. You're safely out of the way, but you can see the whole thing unfolding in horrible detail, and you know some of the wreckage is eventually going to end up on your side of the road.

Winner so far, hat tip to @MJBurrows - the Tapas Budget, lots of fussy little measures that add up to nothing very satisfying

Mindblowing chart from OBR. In 2029 real household disposable income per person expected to be just 1% higher than in 2019. What an unbelievably awful decade. It used to grow by 2%+ every year, not 1% in 10 years.

No one is coming to save you. What a terrible judgment on our social contract. Stabbed at work, no ambulance, had to try to drive herself to hospital, crashed and died. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Everything Martin Lewis campaigns for is in service of the least scrupulous in society. Now it’s weaker council tax enforcement… the second-order effect of which will naturally be increased non-payment, leaving those who do pay their bills to shoulder an ever-greater burden.
When I met Angela Rayner to campaign for change to overly aggressive council tax debt collection, with its unprecedented rapid escalation to balliffs, she nodded like most politicians do. I explained it was destructive for individuals, councils and the economy. She listened more then said she'd change it. I was sceptical. Yet a consultation was launched within weeks and delightfully the change announced within 18mths (its in place from next April) - bullet train pace for politics. I've a rule that if I campaign for a politician (of any party) to do something, and they do it, I say thank you. Its important to recognise it. So thank you so much Angela Rayner for listening and more importantly acting. The changes coming are a great start.

The disconnect between how the program ("scheme" LOL) is explained by politicians, in the annual report/financial statements (when you can't actually lie) and the prospectuses for the bonds issued by Operations Group (when you really can't lie!) is quite jarring.

Kemi Badenoch said she was Nigeria's national chess champion at age 7. So we sent a reporter to Nigeria to find out the truth. She lied. Here is everything else she has lied about:
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Kemi Badenoch did not claim to be Nigeria's national chess champion. In the February 2024 Times interview transcript she said she won "a national competition for chess" at age 7 in Nigeria but immediately clarified "there were only two girls who entered." x.com/victoriapeckha… kemibadenoch.org.uk/news/kemi-bade…

The decline exists but it’s very much not the case it’s institutionally worse than Turkey (who has spent the past decades trying to join the west), Kazakhstan or Thailand
