Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was a British composer and conductor. His most famous work is "The Song of Hiawatha", a setting of poems by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He named his son Hiawatha.
Coleridge-Taylor conducted my local choral society, Rochester Choral Society, for several years. It's not clear why he left, but in this article, Geoff Rambler suggests racism may have played a role. share.google/eJ5JqpkslEjz2G7…
The choir recently performed "The Song of Hiawatha" in Coleridge-Taylor's memory.
Coleridge-Taylor (not to be confused with the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge) was widely acclaimed during his life, but after his death fell into obscurity, though some choirs still performed The Song of Hiawatha - I sang it as a teenager with the Beckenham Chorale. But now his music is enjoying a welcome renaissance. Not just his most famous work, but other pieces too are being dusted down and performed. They are truly gems.
Here's the second movement of his Violin Concerto in G Minor. youtu.be/d5e1IwMq2tA?si=y_oZ…
