2 very dry weeks across England. With most river flows now at or below normal, hard to believe there was extensive flooding at the start of January.

The UK is set for an unsettled period leading to New Year's ☔ This is partly related to the cold air that has been spreading across North America, helping to strengthen the jet stream and push low-pressure systems across the Atlantic 👇

I love this map of population change from 1840 to 2021. The world has six times more people now than it did in 1840. Most countries also have a lot more people. Ireland is an exception - it actually had more people in 1840.

There are increasing signs that the current low pressure dominated setup will begin to change early next week as a huge anticyclone over Europe builds. In addition to drier, calmer conditions it raises the chances of much colder weather as we go into December.

Where on the planet we can see the human footprint and which areas are still untouched? Brightness means high impact on the environment. Great reinterpretation of this concept the ever-excellent @tjukanov. Source: buff.ly/3Oor8qq

The prolonged nature of heat across Europe really is something else! Next week to 10 days forecast temperatures will be 3-6°C above normal almost everywhere. Good for energy use, bad environmentally.

The last 8 years have been the warmest on record globally. With signs of El Niño returning next year (which would boost temperatures even further) extreme weather is going to become more extreme and more frequent.

Goes on and on! Ridiculous temperature anomalies forecast for next week. 12-15°C above what you’d expect in November. The sort of extreme that allowed the 40° in July. We’ve seen this pattern throughout the Summer & Autumn.

This October was one of warmest ever recorded. 6 of the top 10 warmest Octobers have been since 2000 October was slightly wetter than average for the UK as a whole. 2022 is the warmest on record so far.
