#Steamshots #Vaping #HarmReduction #Dampfen #Wissenschaft

Seven years smoke-free! After 44 years of smoking, I never thought this would be possible. Vaping gave me the chance to quit and stay quit. Grateful every single day. #SmokeFree #VapingSavesLives #THR #Vaping NB: Celebrating this milestone on the Swiss National Day makes it even more special. 🇨🇭🥳

Simon Chapman keeps repeating the same argument: New Zealand is an outlier, therefore vaping cannot be responsible for its rapid decline in smoking. But that’s not the question many people are asking. The question is why New Zealand experienced one of the fastest declines in smoking after embracing a regulated consumer vaping market, while Australia chose a prohibition-style pharmacy model and is now grappling with a booming illicit nicotine market, collapsing tobacco excise revenue, widespread illegal vape sales, and concerns that smoking rates may be rising again. Simply pointing to countries like the US, UK or Canada and noting they have higher smoking rates than Australia ignores important context. These countries started from different baselines, have different demographics, different tobacco control histories, and different social factors influencing smoking. Public health outcomes are rarely explained by a single variable. More importantly, Australia’s smoking success largely predates the pharmacy-only model. The relevant question is not why Australia had low smoking rates in the past. It’s whether current policies are delivering the outcomes they promised. When legal access becomes more restrictive but illegal access remains widespread, when former vapers report returning to cigarettes, and when organised crime profits from nicotine prohibition, it seems reasonable to ask whether the policy is working as intended. Instead of engaging with those questions, critics are often dismissed as industry shills, ideologues, or members of some mythical “vaping theology”. Public policy should not be a faith-based exercise. It should be judged by outcomes. And right now, the outcomes deserve far more scrutiny than Simon Chapman appears willing to give them.

Like everything from WHO, that is an idiotic and misleading presentation of vaping. Seven things you ought to know: 1. Worldwide, there are vastly more adults than youth who vape. Your data is profoundly misleading. 2. Many of the young people who take up vaping would otherwise have smoked. So for them, it’s a huge health win. The use of nicotine is migrating to safer products. You ignore this. 3. People will continue to use nicotine whether you approve or not. Once you can find the humility to accept that, the challenge is how to make it acceptably safe and lawful. You don’t understand this basic point. 4. Most of WHO’s prohibitionist policy proposals lead straight to illicit trade and nurture exploitative organised criminal networks. You ignore the evidence: 75% of vape sales worldwide are now illicit. Your big idea is to extend this criminal windfall to pouches. 5. Young people are drawn into criminal networks as suppliers and are exposed to other illegal goods and services, and are introduced to criminality. WHO is the vector of criminalisation and youth exploitation in this marketplace. 6. WHO continues to be captured by narrow interest groups and billionaire foundations, while showing idle contempt for the health of over 1 billion people at serious risk from smoking related disease. You are smug and righteous but wrong about everything. 7. WHO and the people you have copied on your facile misinformation post ought to be ashamed of their role as defenders of the cigarette trade and promoters of organised crime. It’s no wonder the organisation is in terminal decline. You have done this.

abc.net.au/news/2026-05-29/b… This article unintentionally exposes the central contradiction of Australia’s vaping policy. Authorities have now seized more than 20 million illegal vapes worth over $1 billion, and yet the illicit market is clearly still thriving. At what point does public health stop celebrating seizures and start asking whether the policy itself is fundamentally broken? You cannot prohibit or enforce your way out of enormous consumer demand. That lesson has recurred throughout history. Australia built one of the most restrictive nicotine regimes in the Western world: prescription-only access near-total retail prohibition advertising bans sweeping enforcement powers And the result? a massive black market organised crime infiltration widespread youth access through illegal supply chains and billions flowing outside regulated systems. Even within this article, Wayne Hall quietly acknowledges the obvious: Countries with regulated legal vape markets, such as New Zealand and the UK, may actually have more control than Australia currently does. That is the part many within Australian tobacco control still struggle to confront. The current model has not eliminated vaping. It has simply transferred supply into illicit networks while allowing authorities to repeatedly announce “record seizures” as though that alone proves success. Meanwhile, smokers seeking lower-risk alternatives continue to face barriers, pharmacies remain reluctant, prescriptions remain impractical for many people, and criminal markets adapt faster than regulators can respond. This is what happens when ideology overtakes pragmatism. Public health messaging became so focused on eradicating nicotine itself that it lost sight of behavioural reality, harm reduction, and unintended consequences. And now Australia is paying the price for that disconnect in real time.

Replying to @unimpotent
It gets tiresome when family, friends and even strangers on the street go on at you ‘oh why are you vaping? It’s as bad as smoking you know.’ Mothers are having a cry because their grown sons are vaping. Some GPs acknowledge smoking is dropping but ‘now people are vaping. That’s not good either.’ Or worse, people make fun of you, look at you like you’re an idiot. Anti-nicotine researchers keep getting funding to pump out weak biased op eds and so-called scientific studies. Now they’re running quit vaping trials (at $NZ 1.3+ million minimum per study). 🤦🏻‍♀️ Meanwhile, 1.1 billion people smoke tobacco worldwide; over 6 million die each year from smoking-related diseases! Helping people who want to stop smoking 🚬 should be the priority, but there’s a new shiny gravy train and lots of gullible philanthropists, policymakers and politicians who are easy to manipulate with scaremongering and old War-On-Drug alarmism =💰💰

If you try to quit smoking with government-APPROVED smoking cessation tools, here is what happens: - quit - fail - quit -fail -quit - fail (and FEEL LIKE A FAILURE) - quit... REPEAT ~30 TIMES; chance of success is 1 in 10 for NRTs, perhaps 1 in 5 for varenicline.

It occurs to me there is more trumpeting about banning flavoured vapes than quitting smoking. While NGOs are hard at work trying to unjustifiably rid the world of vapes, millions of older adults are still smoking, becoming ill and dying.

🇦🇺 Australia’s Vaping Crackdown: A Cautionary Tale for Europe 🔍 Key Takeaways: 👉 Australia’s strict #vaping laws fueled a black market — now 90% of vapes are illegal. 👉 Public health suffers as users turn to smoking or unsafe products. New Zealand chose a balanced approach: ✅ Legalized vaping in 2020 → smoking rates fell, no major black market. Message for Europe: ⚠️ Learn from Australia — overregulation may backfire. #VapingRegulations #PublicHealth #harmreduction #EUPolicy tinyurl.com/58uak7ax
