If you truly *love* American cities, you MUST support strict enforcement of laws against anti-social behavior. Paying bus fares, red light cameras, camping on sidewalks, smoking on trains, off-leash dogs, etc etc If people want to do whatever they want, that’s FINE in the suburbs or the country on your own land. But it, fundamentally, cannot work in our densest places where people all have to co-operate in proximity. If we do not, it means cities will continue to be primarily for those able to avoid the annoyances ... the wealthy and/or child-free.
If we don’t change this … in 40 years we will look back on allowing dogs in downtowns the same way we look at cars: As a terrible mistake for how it molded dense urban environment for the benefit of a few ... by not properly pricing in public costs of the "free rider" dog owners and by changing the entire culture to accommodate them. My fear is by then (like with cars today) there will be too many ppl accustomed to the private benefits and impunity of living downtown with their dogs so we're only able to make marginal changes And that negative downstream effects (fewer kids, playgrounds, dirty sidewalks, dog attacks) will be baked in

Thrive? They are closing down in a few weeks.
Dukem has been bringing people together over good food for nearly 30 years. I had dinner with Lydia, Dukem’s owner, to talk about what it will take to make sure businesses like hers can thrive in our city.

Another night in Chinatown, Washington DC… 🤷‍♂️ DC Police were called out, but both fights had already broken up once officers arrived. This was a block away from Capital One Arena. Happy early Halloween! 🎃 – at Washington, DC

I am voting against the foie gras ban because I want to discourage people from investing money in future DC ballot initiatives by making them think "even if we have a reasonable idea, we'll probably end up losing like those foie gras people." Take it up with the Council!

This type of sloppy legislative drafting might pass in Oregon where @ProAnimalFuture is based, but should have never passed muster in DC. Shame on @RobertWhite_DC @CMRobertWhiteDC @repoyedc @aparnafordc @ankitjaindc who obviously did ZERO background on this kooky group.
Initiative 86 is clear, targeted and specific. It prohibits force-feeding birds and the sale of enlarged, diseased bird liver products that typically come from force-feeding. It does not restrict the sale of any other meat or poultry.

I know lots of people who avoid restaurants that serve foie gras and veal for example. DC is a small city. Perhaps if the majority vote for this and that ingredient leaves restaurants would get more rather than less business… no one talks about that idea. 🤔

Going to need an answer on this from one of the elected officials endorsing I-86. @repoyedc @RobertWhite_DC @ankitjaindc @aparnafordc
Guys, this foie gras ban is so sloppily written that it would ban Jewish delis from selling chopped chicken liver. Absolutely vote no on this shit.

You can debate the magnitude of people who move for tax reasons. But if you debate the existence you lose all credibility with me. I could easily name more than a dozen people I know who have moved from high-tax jurisdictions to low-tax jurisdictions to reduce their taxes.

300 minutes is 60 (!!!) 5 minute trips. That seems VERY generous...especially when some people are using the discount program to rob and assault people.
Interesting: @DDOTDC has finalized rules changing the discount program for low-income residents for e-scooters and e-bikes offered by companies like Lime. Instead of unlimited rides under 30 minutes, those riders will now get 300 minutes a month.

Thanks for everything, @charlesallen. Chief Contee was right when he said this would take a decade to fix.
EXCLUSIVE: D.C. is launching a recruitment campaign aimed at hiring police officers, corrections officers, firefighters and paramedics. The nearly $500K push comes as competition from federal law enforcement has worsened D.C. police's long standing staffing crisis. Named DC Calls, the campaign spans from Maryland's Eastern Shore (where market research found billboards are likely to recruit firefighters) to New York City (where targeted digital ads aim to attract young police recruits). dc.citycast.fm/public-safety…

Midday shooting in Columbia Heights. It’s wild to me that some people try and argue that DC doesn’t have a serious crime problem.
COLUMBIA HEIGHTS SHOTS FIRED UPDATE: MPD is seeking the public’s help identifying a person of interest in a shooting and felony destruction of property in the 1300 block of Harvard Street NW. Officers found evidence of a shooting around 12:42 p.m. Wednesday. No injuries were reported. Tips: 202-727-9099 or text 50411. A reward of up to $10,000 is available. #MPD

I'm also voting against this because I hate that DC's ballot initiative system has become a playground for out-of-state progressive groups seeking national attention for their causes.
I am voting against the foie gras ban because I am offended that anyone is spending time, money and energy on this. I don’t eat that nastiness, I hate the process, but this is not a good use of resources

It would be good if muggers in DC were afraid enough of consequences that they didn't feel free to return to the scene of their crime and demand back the phone they dropped.

EMPLOYEE OF POPULAR DC RESTAURANT ROBBED AND PUNCHED IN THE FACE DURING TEEN ROBBERY ON 14TH ST NW🚨 According to a DC police report, a worker at the La Grande Boucherie was standing outside of the restaurant on 14th Street NW last night at around 9:50pm when a group of juveniles approached him and asked for a valet parking ticket. One of the suspects then put their hands in the victim’s pocket and felt cash. As the other three suspects approached, two of them grabbed the man’s arms, while another punched him in the face with a closed fist. The suspects then obtained roughly $260 in cash. As one of the suspects was running away, they dropped their iPhone. The victim was able to pick it up and bring it inside, handing it over to a coworker. Once realizing the phone had been dropped, the juvenile suspect returned to the restaurant on THREE separate occasions— demanding his phone back. All four suspects remain on the loose, and MPD continue to investigate the robbery just a few blocks from the White House. #DCCrime

Every politician in America wants to give their constituents cheaper electricity bills. In most cases, there isn't actually an easy button to push to accomplish this. But DC actually has an option — reform the regressive SREC system. capitalcommonsense.com/p/dis…

I'm sorry, the DC Council is proposing risky income, sales and property tax increases not to fund Medicaid or schools--but for a "No Tax on Lawbreakers" initiative? Lots of pro-criminal ideas, including from the Council's leading expert on criminal conduct
There's been a flurry of talk this month in the D.C. Council about whether parking and traffic fines should be reduced. But the reality is that making tickets cheaper for drivers will be costly for the city, and that could complicate any real action: washingtonsun.com/metro/dc-r…

We have loved living in DC, but after PK4 ends it's hard to justify staying here. We can move across the river to Virginia for much better schools, lower taxes, better services, and lower crime.
Replying to @mattyglesias
I would sincerely love our Council to take a minute to imagine a person who lives in DC, has a job, is a net fiscal contributor, and doesn't commit crimes. What have you done over the past year to improve the life of someone like that? What will you do next year?
