A friend recently asked me which digital payments app I was using.
When I told her, she promptly asked, “Why not use BHIM, our very own Indian app?”
I admitted I didn’t know much about it.
“Well, let me introduce you to someone you’ll enjoy meeting.”
That someone was Dilip Asbe, MD & CEO of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Dilip kindly agreed to come over for a chat.
That conversation was illuminating, to put it mildly.
We all know the payment apps we use every day. PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM…
But think of them as trains running on a railway network.
NPCI provides the tracks.
And what an extraordinary railway India has built!
In September, UPI alone processed over 2,400 crore transactions. That’s more than 80 crore transactions every single day!
India is now the world’s largest real-time payments market. A true global force multiplier.
And Dilip has been one of the key people behind that remarkable achievement.
His mind is buzzing with plans to build more ‘railroads’ that will enable new apps in wider financial spheres.
But here’s what struck me most about him.
Not the scale of his achievement. Not his knowledge of the technology.
His humility.
Dilip is well known in financial & technology circles. But I met a man with no airs, no sense of self-importance & seemingly little interest in the spotlight.
Just immense pride in what his team has accomplished & a genuine sense of privilege at being able to serve his country.
I also learned that his mother was a teacher.
Perhaps I’m biased, but I’ve always believed that mothers who are teachers have a special knack for instilling values that last a lifetime. And I couldn’t help wondering if that explained something about Dilip’s grounded personality.
People like him derive their satisfaction not from being seen, but from seeing their work make a difference.
Thank you, Dilip, for the conversation. And for reminding me that ambition & humility can indeed travel together on the railroad to success.
And I’ve switched to the BHIM app now!

Dear @narendramodi
If & when the proposals for LMRH & 335 K9 Vajra SPH reaches CCS, please ask the MoD team these questions:
1) I inaugurated the HAL Tumakuru factory in 2023. If we have an IDDM product like the LUH, why are we going for licensed assembly? We have a 70% stake in HAL. Why can't we just license the LUH design to these private firms? Let them research, invest, let them make the changes they want, build & learn. Why must foreign OEMs be given orders like this? Why can't we make HAL handhold the private firms to build helicopters?
2) I had seen & enjoyed being on the K9 Vajra in 2019. We'd ordered them in 2017 and more in 2024. We still haven't developed an IDDM SPH? Why not? Can't we mandatorily start development of an equivalent IDDM system whenever a relatively small import or license assembly order is placed? That way the rest of the need can be met by aatmanirbharta? And why not do it now? Why order 335 now instead of earlier? Can we still give an IDDM SPH program a chance?
3) Tjis reminds me, I saw that Zorawar Light Tank in June 2026 at L&T too. Why are we buying only 59 of that, that too in two tranches? Rest is a separate competition for 295? Competition is needed but why would a firm like L&T conduct R&D if their R&D effort in ILT is not given adequate orders while their licensed production is given order after order? Would you do it if you were running L&T? So what part of me saying Aatmanirbhar Bharat in May 2020 have you not understood even after all these years?
(If you're not satisfied with the answers & feel we can do better:)
We must make some rational changes to our procurement process if we are to achieve aatmanirbharta. Make sure DAP 2026 is edited to accommodate such reforms and send a draft to my office in three months after consulting the services, startups & SIDM.
Thank you.

Awesome!
Let's reward this IDDM product with orders of 200 helicopters built under Transfer of Technology (ToT). Oh and while we are it, let us split up those 200 into two L1 and L2!

The Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) is powered by a 750kW engine, with an extremely low probability of power loss close to zero. Yet, HAL leaves nothing to chance.
As part of its uncompromising safety philosophy, in this first part of test series, HAL demonstrates autorotation landing capability at Maximum All-Up Weight (AUW) a critical validation step that ensures the helicopter's safe recovery even in the rarest contingencies.
These extensive flight trials and continuing product improvements demonstrate HAL’s commitment to progressively validating and enhancing the LUH.
