We can’t know what BG was thinking when it decided to go down this route - they never spoke to GymPal about it, nor asked for our perspective, or even warned us this HUGE change to the relationship BG had with parents was coming @GymCastic gympal.org.uk/articles/the-c…

That's why I think opportunity cost is the single most important idea in school improvement. Every hour our teachers—and our students—spend on one thing is an hour they don't have to spend on something else. And this matters most of all for students who find learning hardest...

This is a must read for anyone who has even a passing interest in the current education debate. It frames perfectly what the current govn is trying to achieved and how it might best do this, and the trade offs to get there. To me, it appears that standards are being traded off.

Leaving aside the preposterous slur on principled critics of ‘oracy’ in the form currently being promoted, @LucyMPowell and her advisers might find this explanation of what went wrong last time we assessed oral skills directly in GCSEs to be useful. substack.com/@amvspielman/no…

There's been a lot of talk in the last few weeks in edu circles about whether the trad education movement has failed, what it needs to do next, etc. This article is just the latest in a succession of examples that shows how us edu-trads have not been nearly as successful as we hoped in altering elite consensus on education. We have obviously seen with all the Labour party policies that we completely failed to convince Labour. But actually, it's not like we've really convinced the Conservatives either. This is Dan Hannan, major figure in Brexit, major figure in Conservative politics, presumably has some idea of who Michael Gove is - and here he is in the Telegraph confidently asserting that we no longer need to know things because we can look things up. (The ironies in this piece abound, by the way. He argues for lessons in spotting bad bogus arguments at the same time as building an article around the argument that memory doesn't matter any more. He argues that "identifying improbable claims" is a generic skill that can be taught in the abstract, at the same time as claiming that handwriting and geography are obsolete. He says that you can always just look up what you need, whilst signally failing to look up any of the evidence on the role of long-term memory...I could go on.) I wrote a few weeks ago that there was some evidence journalists at the Financial Times were waking up to all the evidence on cognitive science, its implications for schools, the international test evidence. But the elite understanding of this is a very thin layer, absolutely skin deep. The mass of second-hand dealers in ideas are still distilling their frenzy from Romantic pedagogy. Depressing. I honestly don't know what else we can do. We wrote the books. We had the debates. We built the schools. We aced the tests. And then it turned out nobody cared. Right now it is definitely a bleak time to be a trad. It feels like we are on Athelney Marshes, beset by vandals without and dissension within. BUT we have to keep the faith. Reality is an undefeated champion. Despair is a sin! What we do works! It may well be that for now, the New World with all its power & might etc., is going to have to step in to save our bacon for a bit. Maybe the momentum is shifting to @ehanford and Sold a Story, @rastokke and Chalk & Talk, @jettybe3 , etc. We have got to dig in. As Declan Rice said, it's not done!

Sold a Story Season 1 felt like a reckoning over how we teach reading. But the conversation is much bigger. It’s about how we teach, period. “If the student hasn’t learned, the teacher hasn’t taught.” — Zig Engelmann Season 2 is here! 🎧 podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…

A member of my congregation got sacked from the Youth Parliament for holding the wrong views on a live controversial issue. It doesn’t even do the one useful thing it could do: be a forum where children learn to engage in debate with those they disagree with.

This is *literally* why my two-year, mid-career stint teaching in a South Bronx public school turned unexpectedly into a second career that's lasted 25 years: it's insane to expect teachers to create their own curriculum from scratch. And it doesn't work for students.
What are the most effective methods of improving student achievement? An NYT investigation. For me, the data point in the bottom left quadrant is absolutely critical to understanding why student achievement goes wrong so often: teachers making up their own curriculum. nytimes.com/2026/09/28/upsho…

A disappointing answer that fails to even consider the many children who are subjected to assault/battery by their coaches. Often parents don’t know as the coach/child relationship can be akin to coercive control as seen in domestic abuse. Why limit? @JakeBenRichards @NJ_Timothy

My lovely Y3 tutee was upset today. She's been sat next to a child at school who needs considerable support & asked to 'look after him'. It's causing her immense stress but she doesn't want to let anyone down. This isn't her job. It happened to my daughters too & it isn't ok.

“What good readers know” matters just as much as what good readers do. @rpondiscio makes the case that reading comprehension is inseparable from background knowledge. Knowledge builds comprehension. And knowledge compounds over time. Read more: aei.org/research-products/re…
