This is precisely where your article falls short. While praising Hakim Saeed, you have attempted to revive an old case as a political indictment against a particular political party in Karachi, without giving equal attention to all aspects of the motives behind the murder and the political circumstances prevailing at the time.
First: Hakim Saeed Was Also a Muhajir!
Hakim Muhammad Saeed migrated from India to Pakistan after the partition of the subcontinent. Through his hard work, knowledge, and dedication to public service, he established himself in this country. His life stands as testimony to the significant role played by those who migrated from India in building Pakistan, advancing education and medicine, developing commerce, and establishing national institutions.
Therefore, it is a strange contradiction to celebrate Hakim Saeed’s greatness while overlooking his Muhajir identity and, at the same time, targeting a political party that represented Karachi’s Muhajir community. Being a Muhajir is neither a crime nor can political affiliation justify hatred or prejudice against any individual.
Second: Turning a Murder Case and a Judicial Verdict into a Political Slogan Is Wrong.
You wrote that, following Hakim Saeed’s murder, the state failed to deliver justice, the investigation was riddled with contradictions, questions were raised about political pressure, and the prosecution failed to establish its case.
However, one fundamental question must also be addressed: when the courts acquitted the accused and the Supreme Court upheld the acquittals in 2014, should the legal and investigative aspects of the case not be examined impartially while respecting the judicial verdict?
It is not appropriate to disregard judicial decisions and declare a political party guilty without qualification. Justice demands that allegations be evaluated on the basis of evidence, not political affiliation.
Anyone familiar with Karachi’s politics knows that the 1990s were marked by political confrontations, state operations, arrests, allegations of extrajudicial killings, and serious controversies surrounding political victimisation. Hakim Saeed was murdered during this very period. Ignoring this broader context and presenting a single political party as the sole explanation for the entire incident does not amount to a comprehensive understanding of history.
Third: What Happened to the Questions Raised in Hakim Saeed’s Book About Imran Khan?
In his book Japan Kahani, Hakim Saeed discussed what he described as an international conspiracy involving Israeli and Jewish lobbies to make Imran Khan the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
On page 14 of Japan Kahani, Hakim Saeed writes:
