I posted this🧵an hour after @nithyavraman filed to run for Mayor. During this long campaign she has been attacked from all angles. I am reposting b/c in the closing days I want undecideds to know about her steadfast leadership promoting housing and calling out City Hall’s BS. ⤵️
A 🧵 explaining why I enthusiastically support @nithyavraman to be the Next Mayor of LA!
When ED1 was first issued it applied broadly including to certain R1 properties. We had a client file for multiple projects with state vesting rights. Mayor Bass then changed ED1

Japan has about the same poverty rate as the United States. The entire country, 123 million people, has fewer people living on the street than the city of San Diego.
Poor families in Tokyo live scattered across the whole city, mixed in with everyone else, and a couple of pretty boring government policies make that happen. One of them has to do with where your kid goes to school.
Housing is the easier one to see. Slums show up when the only cheap rent in a city sits in one part of town. Tokyo, with about 14 million people, broke ground on 129,571 new homes in its 2024 fiscal year. California has 39 million people and permitted about 102,000 in all of 2025. In Japan you can put up an apartment building almost anywhere without going through years of hearings, and buildings lose value over time like a used car, so owners knock them down and rebuild one lot at a time. You end up with a cheap old two-story apartment sitting near a brand new tower in pretty much every neighborhood, and the cheap rent ends up everywhere.
The school one is the part most Americans have never heard about.
Here, a lot of public school money comes from local property taxes. So if you want your kid in a good school, you pay up for a house in a good district. Families who can't afford that end up in the same few neighborhoods, their schools get less money, and after a couple of generations you have whole zip codes where almost everyone is struggling.
Japan takes most of the money out of that decision. For public elementary and middle schools, the prefecture pays two-thirds of teacher salaries and the national government covers the rest, so a teacher in a poor area gets paid off the same scale as one in a rich area. Teachers also get moved to a new school every three to six years. The best teacher in Tokyo could be at the poorest school in the city this year. If the school down the street is about as good as the one across town, there's not much reason to pay extra to move.
Tokyo had shantytowns within living memory, too. The March 1945 firebombing left around a million people homeless, and families lived in shacks and old air raid shelters. The country needed something like 4.2 million new homes, spent the next twenty years building its way out, and honestly never stopped.

LA has spent four years asking: Where is our mayor?
When I’m mayor, you won’t have to ask.
LA deserves a city that shows up for us. A Los Angeles that loves us back. Let’s go get it.

BREAKING: Jared Kushner’s hacked iPhone revealed that Kushner promised MBS and MBZ he would push their agenda with Trump if they participated in a secret fund, with the two royals initially discussing over $10 billion before ultimately placing at least $2 billion into accounts for him, according to a Vanity Fair excerpt from Princes and Thieves.
The revelation lands as Kushner remains deeply involved in Iran war diplomacy, while Tehran has separately accused him and Steve Witkoff of pocketing $9 billion through market manipulation.

This should be an alarming, blaring, screaming headline. NO, folks, this isn't your typical pay to play, "something they all do." It isn't. It's a betrayal to our country and unprecedented corruption on an unbelievable scale.
The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…
Going over my ballot and I am again reminded that California's initiative and referendum system is garbage and should be thrown out entirely. Expecting voters to make informed decisions on complex matters of public policy is absurd and an abdication of responsibility by our reps.

Today, Brad Lander, rabbis, and other New Yorkers accompanied Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest. For that, they were detained by the Israeli government.
Harvesting olives is not illegal. The occupation is.
I am thankful that Brad has been released. But other New Yorkers remain detained, and they must be released immediately.
The same Israeli government detaining them has committed a horrific genocide against Palestinians, killing more than 74,000 people over the last few years alone.
The detention of these New Yorkers must end. The occupation must end. The genocide must end.

The term "shylock" was said by the President of the United States, but he's not mentioned here because we don't, apparently, go hard after right wing antisemites anymore as long as they support Bibi-ism.
This is the perfect example of why the left Jewish community is upset by our communal organizations.
The term “Shylock” is rooted in a longstanding antisemitic stereotype. Regardless of intent, its use can reinforce harmful tropes about Jews and normalize language that has long been used to target the Jewish community.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The term was used (for at least the second intent in as many years) by President Trump.

Over 100 environmental leaders have signed an open letter denouncing Chevron’s support for Karen Bass and condemning Big Oil’s attempt to influence Los Angeles elections.
It’s no surprise that one of the biggest polluters in LA County is supporting my opponent. Every local environmental organization has endorsed my campaign. As mayor, I’ll focus on climate resilience and emergency preparedness, expand park space, plant 100,000 trees before the Olympics, ban oil drilling within City limits, reduce dependence on imported water, and improve air quality.

If California's rents fell to the national average, its poverty rate would drop 30%, Pew finds. Rents absorbed 78% of CalFresh's $13.1B benefit growth since 1989.
Austin and Minneapolis saw rents fall about 20% after reforms, Pew says.
This is infuriating. Israel is undeniably out of control and has been for years. Cutting off aid entirely is the only thing that will make a difference. They do not deserve America's support.
Masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers on Friday, setting olive groves on fire and slinging rocks.
Caught in the attack was Post photographer Heidi Levine. “They just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times,” Levine said. wapo.st/4yt6dHY
