Deep into lower Saxony, there is a massive battlefield at Harzhorn containing 1,700 Roman artifacts dated to 230s AD.
After large-scale Germanic raids into the Empire Maximinus Thrax undertook punitive campaigns bringing the war into Germany:
"He marched, then, into Germany across the Rhine...he burned villages, drove away flocks, slew numbers of the barbarians themselves, enriched his own soldiers, and took a host of captives, and, had not all the Germans fled to the swamps and forests, he would have brought all Germany under Roman sway"

The last Emperor of Austro Hungary was also the only leader who fully embraced the peace proposals of the Vatican. Other leaders stated they wanted peace publicly, but in reality did little to halt the catastrophic war of 1914-1918.
For more in the peace efforts that Emperor Karl wanted but the world rejected, see this article from a few months ago.

On October 8, 1950, Mao Zedong signed the order that sent China to war in Korea.
It formally created the Chinese People's Volunteers and named Peng Dehuai as commander.
The name was a lie on purpose. These weren't volunteers. They were regular divisions of the People's Liberation Army, ordered to go. But calling them volunteers meant China could fight the United States without officially declaring war on it. Stalin had suggested the idea a week earlier.
Mao sent word to Kim Il Sung the same day: help was coming.
But Mao had a problem. His army had almost no air power. Sending hundreds of thousands of men into Korea without planes overhead meant they'd be slaughtered by American bombers.
So that same day, Zhou Enlai boarded a plane for the Soviet Union to meet Stalin at his villa on the Black Sea. The mission was to get Soviet air cover.
Stalin dodged. He said Soviet planes wouldn't be ready to cover Chinese troops in Korea for months.
Mao was furious. For a few days, he actually put the whole intervention on hold.
Then he decided to go anyway, air cover or not.
Eleven days after this order, the first Chinese soldiers crossed the Yalu at night, marching in the dark so American planes wouldn't see them.

Oct 7, 1763: King George III drew a line down the spine of the Appalachian Mountains and told American colonists they couldn't cross it.
Britain had just won the French and Indian War and taken control of everything east of the Mississippi. That spring, Native nations led by the Ottawa war chief Pontiac rose up across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley and captured or attacked British forts all over the frontier. London wanted to stop the bloodshed and avoid paying for endless Indian wars.
So the Proclamation of 1763 reserved all the land west of the mountains for Native peoples. Colonists already living out there were told to leave. Nobody could buy Native land except through the Crown.
The colonists were furious. Many of them had fought in the war specifically to open up that land. Veterans had been promised land grants out there. Speculators had already staked claims. One of those speculators was George Washington, who privately called the proclamation a temporary measure and kept quietly surveying western land anyway.
Thousands of settlers ignored it and crossed the mountains regardless. The line never really held. But it was one of the first times Americans felt London was deciding their future without them, and that feeling kept growing for the next 13 years.

Oct 6, 1683: Thirteen German families stepped off a ship called the Concord in Philadelphia and started the first German settlement in America.
They came from Krefeld, along the Rhine, and they were Mennonites and Quakers looking for a place where they could practice their faith without being persecuted. William Penn had been recruiting settlers for his new colony, and he promised religious freedom. Their leader, a young lawyer named Francis Daniel Pastorius, laid out a town a few miles outside Philadelphia. They called it Germantown.
Five years later, in 1688, Pastorius and three other men in Germantown wrote a petition against slavery and sent it to their Quaker meeting. They argued it was wrong to buy and sell human beings no matter their color. It was the first formal protest against slavery in the American colonies. The Quakers set it aside, and it wasn't rediscovered until over a century later.
Millions of Germans followed. Today more Americans claim German ancestry than any other. In 1983, 300 years after the Concord landed, Oct 6 became German-American Day.

🇺🇸 The first carrier task force set sail in the Civil War, too.
August 1862. The USS George Washington Parke Custis set out again, this time with armed escorts.
Commodore Charles Wilkes wanted a look at Fort Powhatan on the James River. He put the screw sloop Wachusett in charge. The tug Stepping Stones towed the Custis. Gunboats Tioga and Port Royal, plus the armed steamer Delaware, went along as escorts.
Confederate lookouts watched the flotilla come around the bend. A coal barge, a hydrogen balloon, a tug, and four warships.
They made balloon ascensions off the fort and again about ten miles below it. No new batteries. No rebel force gathering where the reports said there should be one.
Wilkes’s order was if the balloonists spotted works going up, the gunboats were to shell them.
First time the Navy sent the balloon boat out as its own little task force.

🇺🇸 Our nations first aircraft carrier was in the Civil War. The USS George Washington Parke Custis.
In August 1861 the Navy bought her. She had been built in the 1850s as a coal barge.
At the Washington Navy Yard, John A. Dahlgren fitted her with a flat deck and one of Thaddeus Lowe’s hydrogen generators to fill up the observation balloon.
On November 10 the steamer Coeur de Lion towed her down the Potomac.
The next day, off Mattawoman Creek, Lowe went up with General Daniel Sickles (Yes, THAT Daniel Sickles). From the barge they watched the Virginia shore, about three miles away.
Lowe reported: “We had a fine view of the enemy’s camp-fires during the evening, and saw the rebels constructing new batteries at Freestone Point.”
Earlier, on August 3, 1861, John La Mountain ascended from the armed steamer Fanny. However, Custis was the first vessel converted specifically for the job of hauling aircraft.

Equipment alone is not a force multiplier. Only coordination of effort, intelligence and communication on the battlefield, and unit cohesion allow the tools to do their job. A good lesson from the little known history of the Chinese Army during a disasterous defeat in the 1930s Sino Japanese War.

GAME ON!
Yes, Zeppelins and other lighter than air craft are one of my guilty pleasures in historical study. From the Italian airship that crossed the North Pole, to the mysterious sightings of airships in California during the 1890s, there is something alluring about their historical appearances.
But perhaps none as remarkable as the event that occured in 1917, when a lone Zeppelin went in an unprecedented resupply mission to support THE MOST successful clandestine Army in modern history, The Imperial German African army under General von Vorbeck and his mix of German and African soldiers cut off from all support since August 1914 and constantly conducting hit and run operations against the British Empire the entire time.
This book just came in thanks to the author Dominic Etzold - Historian who has a great Facebook page detailing little known First World War historical snapshots. Can't wait to dig into this one!!

The Chinese Communist Party’s policies have killed more people than the Nazis.
The Black Book of Communism estimates that roughly 65 MILLION Chinese people were killed under the CCP’s campaigns.
Other estimates put the death toll even higher.
Yet while the horrors of Nazi Germany are universally condemned, the CCP’s murderous history receives a fraction of the attention.
And the same regime responsible for those atrocities still rules China today.
Ignorance of history is a vulnerability. Combined with "cute" social media accounts it becomes a potentially dangerous mix.

A Canadian defense official warned that restarting military talks with China would hurt ties with the US. Weeks later, she was fired.
Raquel Garbers, the principal author of Canada's 2024 defence policy, published an op-ed in October 2025 warning that anti-US rhetoric from Western leaders was splitting the alliance while China and Russia waged a covert campaign against both countries. Two days later, Canada's foreign minister called China a "strategic partner" while in Beijing. One month after her op-ed, Garbers was told her position was being declared surplus, with no alternative post offered. Her employment ended in May 2026.
She's since filed a $2 million wrongful-dismissal claim, arguing the "surplus" explanation is pretextual and that her firing chilled dissent inside Ottawa's bureaucracy. The Department of National Defence has declined to comment, citing litigation, and the allegations haven't been tested in court.
Then, on September 4, 2026, Canada and China held their first defense dialogue in eight years, first announced only by Beijing. Garbers called this exactly what she'd warned about: Ottawa's silence handed China a propaganda win while reinforcing Washington's suspicion that Canada functions as Beijing's back door into US security and markets.
