Chinese WZ-7 high-altitude reconnaissance drones reportedly conducted two flights through the Miyako Strait between Okinawa and Miyako Island on November 2, prompting Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force to scramble fighter jets. According to Japan’s Joint Staff, the aircraft flew from the East China Sea through the strait into the Pacific before returning toward mainland China. Japanese authorities released photographs and flight-path information documenting the activity. The WZ-7, also known as Xianglong or “Soaring Dragon,” is a high-altitude, long-endurance reconnaissance UAV designed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Its capabilities could support maritime surveillance and potentially provide targeting information for long-range weapons, although Japan’s announcement did not indicate that such activities took place during these flights.
