Tune-in to @WMO at 2pm CET for the launch of their #StateofClimate report on climate & health action.
#IPCC’s Synthesis Report identified the increase of the days per year where heat-humidity poses risks to human health without additional adaptation.

The last bar on the right represents the temperature anomaly wrt pre-industial for the month of September 2023. Words can't easily convey how abnormally large this is: by far the warmest September on record; no other month ever reached anomalies as large. @CopernicusECMWF

Surprising. Astounding. Staggering. Unnerving. Bewildering. Flabbergasting. Disquieting. Gobsmacking. Shocking. Mind boggling.

Climate change is simple.
We started burning fossil fuels during the industrial revolution, adding extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
As a direct consequence - due to well understood physics - global temperatures started to increase.
We are now experiencing the consequences.

A heatwave will grip Mediterranean region next 2 weeks, says WMO regional center @DWD. Max temps above 35–40 °C, and in Middle East and southeastern Türkiye, up to 45 °C. Extreme heat also in North Africa. #StateOfClimate. Stay tuned for updates. bit.ly/3NcHPVD

Unofficial records suggest that in recent days the global average temperature was the warmest that has ever been directly measured. What does that mean? 🧵

ALT A red and blue map of the world. The colors represent the amount of heat radiating away from Earth, as measured by satellite. Red colors indicate warm temperatures, and the blue areas are clouds. This is called “brightness temperature.” Most of the map is light red. The southwestern United States, northern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and much of Asia are dark red. The image was captured by the NASA/NOAA Suomi NPP satellite on July 5, 2023.

🌡️ Every increment of warming results in rapidly escalating hazards.
More intense heatwaves, heavier rainfall & other weather extremes further increase risks for human health & ecosystems.

Science is not a belief system
You cannot pick & choose which bits to believe & which to deny
Science is a rational/logical system based on collecting observations & evidence which modern society is based
So believe/deny whatever you want - Earth 🌍 is still getting hotter 🥵

One of our most stark findings in the recent IPCC report is that humans are the cause of pretty much all observed warming.
Natural forcings alone would have led to flat or slightly cooling temps, and multidecadal variability is unlikely to play a major role in modern warming.

Replying to @AndrewDessler
Most of the recent literature suggest closer to 2.6 or 2.7C under current policies. But the reason the IPCC value is a bit high is that it’s summarizing all the current policy scenarios over the past 5 years, which misses some progress made. Here are more recent studies:

Yesterday the IPCC 6th Assessment published its Synthesis Report (SYR) which included this graphic (SYR.1c) which has been a popular way to discuss future warming in the context of different generations.
What were the inspirations for this graphic?

If the ECMWF seasonal model is right about ENSO's rapid transition this spring, it would be a rare feat: only twice since 1950 has Niño3.4 warmed from -0.5°C to +0.5°C between January and May (1957, 1997). Model consensus is for El Niño to emerge later, in summer...

Changes are emerging across the climate system. Everywhere we look, the climate is changing rapidly.
Rate of recent changes is unprecedented in at least 2000 years for many climate metrics.
These changes are not natural; they are primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels.
