Is there actual Great War on the horizon? Who knows. And what does ‘Great War’ even mean when we already are in the midst of many fronts in a large-scale war we continue to treat as disparate? What does it mean in the midst of great upheavals and global restructuring (thru military and economic violence)? We don’t need the materialization of any conventional or official War to bear the brunt of consequences. The threat of it matters more right now because it’s in moments of threat - real or manufactured - that usurpation of rights, freedoms and resources happens. It’s in the midst of “preparation” that we see major (upward) wealth redistribution, regulations rolled back, dissent (further) crushed and the space for it (further) dismantled, expanding state power and greater reactionary rhetoric and the consequences of that. So it’s not about if a Great War is coming but what gets accomplished in ‘waiting’ for it.
