Last night, a very special little dog named Kuzia passed away at the Дай лапу, друже (Give Me a Paw, Friend) animal shelter in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. I’m heartbroken, but I wanted to share his extraordinary story because I think he deserves to be remembered.
Kuzia was rescued from a rubbish pit near Komyshuvakha, a town in Zaporizhzhia oblast devastated by the war. He had been shot three times, including in the head, and had lost an eye. When rescuers found him, they initially thought he was dead. Then he barked.
Veterinarians believed he would never walk again. The bullets had caused severe neurological damage, and removing them was considered too dangerous. But Kuzia had an extraordinary will to live.
Under the loving care of Irina Didur and the volunteers at the shelter, Kuzia slowly began to recover. After months of rehabilitation, he managed to stand. Then he learned to walk. Eventually, against all expectations, he could even run.
Kuzia never fully recovered from his injuries. He lived with serious disabilities and required specialized food and ongoing veterinary treatment. But he refused to give up, and neither did the people who loved him.
Over the years, his remarkable story touched people across Ukraine and beyond. Over the years many regularly contributed to his care and recovery. I was fortunate enough to be one of them.
I had hoped to bring Kuzia home to Kyiv and give him a peaceful retirement, but his neurological condition made the stress of travel a serious concern. Sadly, I never got the opportunity to hold him in my arms.
I often think about what life must be like for the hundreds of dogs at the shelter. However hard Irina and her volunteers work, there are simply too many animals and too few resources. Kuzia deserved a life of comfort, freedom, and love, as they all do.
But I’ve come to believe that Kuzia’s life had a purpose far beyond his own survival. His courage and determination inspired people to open their hearts and their wallets. And I like to think that the generosity he inspired didn’t just help him, but also helped feed, shelter, and save other animals who had nowhere else to turn.
In that sense, this little dog who had suffered so terribly may have helped save lives himself.
The night before Kuzia passed, I prayed for his sweet little soul. I asked the spirits of all the animals I’ve loved and lost over the years to be there waiting for him, to welcome him and help him cross the Rainbow Bridge, so he wouldn’t have to make that journey alone.
I want to thank Irina and everyone at Дай лапу, друже for everything they did for him. Their work, especially in a city living under the constant threat of war, is an extraordinary act of compassion. I’ll never forget what they did for Kuzia, and I’ll continue supporting their efforts to care for the hundreds of other animals who depend on them.
Kuzia never knew how many people loved him, or how far away some of us were. He didn’t know how many hearts he touched or how much kindness he inspired. He was just a little dog who had been terribly hurt and somehow found the strength to keep living.
But sometimes the smallest creatures leave the greatest impressions on our hearts.
Rest peacefully, sweet Kuzia. You were a little angel, and I’ll never forget you. ❤️🐾🌈

NEW - a serious legal loophole has been exposed: sentences in youth courts cannot be challenged for being ‘unduly lenient’.
In this case, a 14-year-old boy who stabbed a girl in the neck in a “terrifying, premeditated & persistent” attack received a non-custodial referral order for wounding with intent.
Had the sentence been imposed at Crown Court the Attorney General could send it to the Court of Appeal for review under the ‘unduly lenient sentence’ scheme, but cases in youth courts (and magistrates courts) are exempted. There are understandably growing calls to close this loophole. I don’t expect many cases would be affected but it’s surely important that there’s a check on those sentences which are so clearly out of kilter.

456 PATIENTS DIED
This is one of the biggest medical scandals in British history and there is a decent chance you have never heard of it.
Between 1988 and 2000, patients admitted to Gosport War Memorial Hospital in Hampshire for things like hip fractures and chest infections were routinely put on syringe drivers pumping a steady stream of diamorphine, a powerful opioid. Many were not in pain. Most died within days of being hooked up.
Nurses noticed straight away. In 1988, staff on the Redclyffe Annexe told their managers something was badly wrong. They told their union, the Royal College of Nursing. They kept raising it for years. Management's response was to tell them to stop making waves.
The doctor overseeing the prescribing was Dr Jane Barton. In 2010 the General Medical Council @gmcuk found her guilty of serious professional misconduct in the care of 12 patients. She was not struck off. She retired instead, presumably somewhere with no syringe drivers.
3 separate police investigations by Hampshire Constabulary went absolutely nowhere across 3 decades. Zero prosecutions. Grieving families asking why their relatives died 5 days after routine surgery were treated as the problem.
Then in 2018, after a 4 year inquiry costing 14 million pounds, the Gosport Independent Panel confirmed what those nurses said in 1988.
456 patients died after being given opioids with no medical justification. The panel said probably 200 more died the same way, but their records had gone missing, because of course they had.
Kent Police @kent_police then launched Operation Magenta, reviewing over 750 patient records, taking 1200 witness statements and eventually naming 24 suspects. In November 2025, 7 years into that investigation and 37 years after the first nurse spoke up, police told the families of 101 patients there would be no charges. Their cases did not meet the evidential test. The rest remain under review, with the Crown Prosecution Service @CPSUK holding the final say on any charges, whenever that call finally comes.
So here is where things stand. A regulator confirmed the misconduct. A panel confirmed the cover-up. Nurses were proven right 30 years after the fact. And to this date, not one person has been prosecuted for any of the 456 deaths.
If you raise a concern about patient safety and get ignored for 3 decades, congratulations, you were right all along. Doesn't bring anyone back though.

A 14YO boy lay in wait to attack a 14YO girl - where he stabbed her TEN times - and stabbed a shopkeeper.
A judge panders to him in court, calling him a "bright boy" and "prison is no place for him" and let's him walk free.
Police say it was a miracle the girl survived. She suffers nightmares and ongoing trauma that will affect her for the rest of her life.
Her family left distraught.
A public outraged - moved in their droves to challenge it.
Yet nothing will be done.
This boy learns he can commit the most horrific, violent attacks and be greeted with nothing but softly spoken words and a smile.
The girl learns her life, her safety, her future does not matter.
This country is a disgrace. A shameful, catastrophic hellhole of injustice with a legal system that cares only for horrific offenders and NO regard whatsoever for the trail of destroyed lives they leave behind.
I absolutely despair.
Thank you to everyone who challenged it. They gave us hope justice could prevail by including it on the website - but had no intention of following it through - which somehow makes it even worse. 😞
🙏Thank you so much to everyone who sent in an unduly lenient sentence request and/or shared this post.
This outrageous sentence is now being considered for review.
I hope this girl knows that she matters.
I hope she knows we are rooting for her.
I hope she knows we will not accept it.
And I hope the Attorney General does the right thing and changes this sentence to one that truly reflects the gravity of what this boy did.
Thank you again everyone 💜🥹

💜 A heartfelt thank you to J.K. Rowling 💜
To have someone of J.K. Rowling’s courage, influence and conviction publicly acknowledge and celebrate our victory means more to us than words can express. 🥹
The past three years have been an incredibly difficult journey for the Darlington nurses. We have faced challenges we could never have imagined but through it all, we have remained determined to stand up for what we believe is right. 💪🏻
Moments like this remind us that we are not alone!!
J.K. Rowling has shown extraordinary courage in standing up for women, often at considerable personal cost. Her unwavering support for women who have found themselves in difficult and sometimes frightening circumstances has given so many of us strength.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Jo. Thank you for your courage, your compassion and for using your voice to make sure women like us are heard!
Your support means the world to us and we will never take it for granted.
With love and gratitude,
The Darlington Nurses 💜

A contemptible failure to use normal judgment and common sense.
Judges start travelling on the buses, mingle with ‘the man in the street’, try walking down the high street, feel the public’s mood, feel the nation’s longing for proper justice.
The more you Judges get chauffeured around the more you lose touch with the everyday reality for people, the reality for families of victims, their pain, their suffering, their daily anguish.
