y'know, part of what I love about the @GA_Conf awards is just learning about all the a11y features that have been introduced in games I already know & love-- I've played Diablo for ages and finding out how much access support they added in VoH absolutely made my day 😊😈
Best blind & low vision accessibility goes to @Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred!

Also, thanks @stevesaylor for hitting on the importance of academic research being shared beyond paywalls, especially for a11y work that's so relevant outside academia! for those interested, my finalist paper "Playing on Hard Mode" is open access on the ACM DL! (link in reply)

Great micropaper from @FrankElavsky on the pro & cons of “options” as accessibility solutions— def a good lens for looking at #CHI2023 a11y work Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for a good option— but sometimes, navigating a small novel of a11y options is a barrier in&of itself!

do folks have a term for this phenomenon in gaming? 1. a game is accessible [enough] at the start of gameplay 2. some inaccessible game element is introduced mid-game (eg, an underwater level with different controls) 3. the game is now inaccessible #accessibility #gaming

the best term I have is 'The Wall Effect', i.e. a Wall that 1) prevents you from going further in a game, and 2) blocks you from seeing how big an issue this will be in the rest of the game but I can't find *any* refs for that term. did I make it up?? is there a different name??
