Mustafa is the best of the best on Iraq. Hire him before someone else does.
After 12 years covering Iraq for @washingtonpost , this journey has come to an end. I was laid off as part of the layoffs that began affecting the International desk earlier this year. I’m proud of every moment of those 12 years, and deeply proud to have had the opportunity to tell Iraq’s story through one of the most consequential periods in its recent history — from the rise of ISIS and the long war that followed, through years of political upheaval, protests, regional tensions, and most recently the Iran war. Above all, I had the honor and privilege of working alongside brilliant colleagues who became some of my closest friends. I couldn’t have asked for better colleagues or people to share this journey with. I leave this chapter grateful for everything it taught me, the stories I was trusted to tell, and the people I met along the way. Here’s to new adventures and whatever comes next. And as I begin looking for my next opportunity, I’d be grateful if friends and colleagues would keep me in mind for any roles, projects, collaborations, or opportunities where my experience in journalism, research, Iraq could be useful.

The great @LovedayM traveled to Kurdish militant camps on the Iran-Iraq border to investigate whether fighters crossed into Iran or were involved in covert ops with Israel / the US. The definitive account of what happened, & what didn’t. @newlinesmag now newlinesmag.com/reportage/ir…

Great reading from @LovedayM. Captures the realities on the ground perfectly.
NEW: Iranian Kurdish militias in the mountains of Iraq see a unique opportunity. But without air cover, political guarantees and reliable backers, the peshmerga aren't crossing the border yet. @LovedayM reports from the Zagros Mountains for @newlinesmag. newlinesmag.com/reportage/ir…

US forces killed Mazen Dana in front of me and other journalists. The sound of the shots is still vivid. After his body was removed, a colleague put Mazen’s blood-spattered camera in our car to take to Reuters. Mazen had a wife and 4 children. Can confirm it was “not a great” day

NEW: As the first explosions from Iran's retaliatory attack sounded across Gulf Arab states last Saturday, the State Dept was still scrambling to finalize a key bureaucratic task - securing approvals for U.S. embassies in the region to evacuate non-essential personnel. 🧵

Solid sourcing is more important than ever. Disinformation is flying, and some of it appears designed to drag the Gulf into more direct confrontation.
🚨🇦🇪🇮🇱 A source close to the United Arab Emirates to @Jerusalem_Post: In Abu Dhabi, officials are struggling to understand Israel's conduct and the nature of the briefings coming out of Jerusalem. This concerns a sovereign state that makes its decisions independently. Publications of this kind do not help the regional effort and could cause damage to the relationship. The source added: It is inappropriate for what is referred to as a "senior Israeli official" to speak on our behalf and/or spread rumors about the actions of another sovereign state.

This is tonight in Tehran. Explosions everywhere, and people are terrified. At the same time, the Islamic Republic has shut down the internet, leaving millions in darkness and forcing families around the world into painful uncertainty about their loved ones. Silence, fear, and suffering, this is what ordinary Iranians are living through tonight. 💔💔 For more video check @Vahid

So if I've got this straight, today on Iraq we had: - Militia strikes on a number of US targets: US Embassy Baghdad, the US facility at the Baghdad airport, Erbil Airport/Erbil Air Base (which resulted the death of one member of Kurdish security services) - Militia strikes in the Green Zone near a meeting between Chief Justice Faiq Zidan and PM Sudani - Militia strikes in Sulaymaniya, including on a Peshmerga unit, a hotel, and an Iranian Kurdish opposition group - And we had a bunch of Iraqi MPs chanting death to Israel, death to America, and long live Khamenei Not a great day in Iraqi news

The unlearned lesson of previous ‘decapitation strikes’: ripple effects of targeting individuals without full picture of impact. When Trump ordered assassination of Soleimani in 2020, the strike also killed Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, unravelling centralised control of Iraqi militias. nytimes.com/2026/03/07/us/po…

If desalination plants are considered legitimate targets it could have very severe consequences throughout the region. Also the Gulf countries are very dependent.
A US-Israeli airstrike has destroyed the desalination plant in Qeshm Island, southern #Iran, severing the residents' access to freshwater. A war in which passenger planes and industrial facilities are the target is simply a confused war of destruction that the world cannot ignore

Statement from Iraqi government on attack on US Embassy Baghdad. This has been a redline for the government and Sudani is ordering government to pursue the perpetrators. Of course, we should expect the USG will be prepared to retaliate on its on terms.
