The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”
Biology beyond boundaries.
From Discovery to Impact: Building Bridges Across Disciplines
An exceptional gathering of scientific minds came together for an engaging and thought-provoking panel discussion in presence of Dr. @rajesh_gokhale Director General, BRIC Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and invited speakers, moderated by Dr. Pushkar Sharma, Director (Additional Charge) and Dr. Gopalan Sampathkumar, Senior Scientist, @NImmunology .
The discussion brought together diverse perspectives, challenged conventional thinking, and explored the potential of courageous, bigger and bolder ideas that can build bridges across disciplines and translate scientific discoveries into meaningful impact.
The Secretary encouraged scientists to look beyond the laboratory, pursue innovation with a broader societal vision, and focus on creating jobs and opportunities through research and scientific enterprise.

Fantastic symposium @bric
Dr. Mahendran K. R., Scientist E-II at @RGCB_Trivandrum, is presenting his work on engineering transmembrane pores.
His lab studies how these tiny pores work and how they can be used to detect biomolecules and chemicals.
This research may help develop new biosensors and therapies.

How do plants turn local wounding response into a whole-plant defense?
Our work identifies CNGC13, a vasculature localized Ca²⁺ channel that helps propagate systemic Ca²⁺ waves and activate jasmonate & glucosinolate defenses in Arabidopsis.
A new piece of the puzzle in long-distance plant immunity and wound signalling and acts in parallel to well known GLR channels
First PNAS from my lab and is combined efforts of a great team : Misha @MishaKu16647918 and Ramgopal as first authors. Supported by Bhawana @BhawanaSha17 and Mahendra @MahiPawar12 from lab
We thank Alex Costa @lab_costa for his constant support and collaboration ; Yong-Fei Wang for electrophysiology
A huge shout out to @DBTIndia @NIPGRsocial for funding and encouraging basic plant science in India and Arabidopsis research

Dr. Jackson James (Scientist, Regenerative Biology Program, BRIC-RGCB) and his team were awarded Rs. 7 crores from the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas (MAHA) MedTech Mission grant launched by Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Gates Foundation. The project is being carried out at BRIC-RGCB in collaboration with a start-up, IndZita Biotech Private Limited, Thiruvananthapuram, and Karkinos Healthcare Private Limited, Mumbai. The device works by detecting piRNA-based biomarkers in blood and measuring them using nanopore technology, a highly sensitive method of detecting molecules at the nanoscale. Dr. K. R. Mahendran (Scientist, Transdisciplinary Biology Program, BRIC-RGCB) and Dr. Ani V. Das (Senior Program Scientist, Cancer Research Program, BRIC-RGCB) are also part of this major grant.
