such a relief to realize that I have it all figured out. of course, now that means I need to live it, which is a whole new challenge

nice, got my first sale on this 1.5y after posting it and 3y after writing it. I've officially made money selling a book.
2 years ago I drafted a manual based on: - a vision of pragmatic small-scale eutopias - a recognition that most attempts at such cultures were failing to acknowledge or account for trust-related constraints that are now obvious to me it's now for sale! malcolmocean.gumroad.com/l/h…

U can see this place as a broadcast platform, one to many, if U so choose, if U need to, but it's way more fun and life-giving to see it as a cosmic playground, many to many, where we are learning Right Speech and Right Livelihood, friendship and kindness and forgiveness together

People regularly ask "Why all the memorization?" and there are several answers: - Most people are not called to memorize anything as adults. Simply polishing off the rust induces pride and self-esteem - That which is not known cannot be integrated. "I can just Google it" does not allow you to tie together ideas in your head, both actively and in the background as you live your life. - Automaticity, "the ability to perform a task effortlessly, quickly, and without conscious attention as a result of extensive learning, repetition, and practice." When we are young, we memorize things like multiplication tables that we know we'll use a lot. It would be inefficient if it took effort every time we had to do basic multiplication. So training those skills such that they execute automatically frees up cognitive space for higher order and more syntopical thinking. - Memorizing something is kind of like conditioning a muscle. Once you have it memorized, you get more delight out of reciting or recalling it. And: memorizing a poem or a work allows you to have the physical experience of being a vessel for that work. It is a way to invite the muse into your life in a way that is beyond your current years or capacity. Perhaps you cannot write a transcendent poem, but you can still feel transcendence through the recitation of another's work.
Now that cohort 16 approaches its final few weeks, I am distributing final exam prep material. Here's what the final requires, with a minimum of 90% to pass.

> "What transformations of the payoff matrix make the collective action problem vanish?" is mechanism design, sometimes called reverse game theory: start from the outcome you want and design the game that produces it. Hurwicz, Maskin and Myerson shared the 2007 economics Nobel for founding it.

Alcoholic cybersec friend at Fortune 500 insurance company texted to tell me he received an email from his boss thanking him on his diligence patching every PHP box overnight but he was drunk all day yesterday and didn’t know anything until waking up 30 minutes ago
Lol I am pretty sure someone is runing a deepseek swarm to remotely patch unpatched php boxes. Well good on them.

Years ago, a rat friend of mine got dumped for answering β€œWhat do you love about me?” with a list of traits. We laughed. β€œWhat else!? Her soul?” But she was game-theoretically right: only loving someone for their *inalienable* soul survives whatever life may turn them into.

still true
people making fun of people worried about AI risk (as fearmongerers, grifters, profiteers, luddites.,) have no idea how much we would LOVE to read a tweet or essay that would cause us to confidently realize that humanity's got this and there's nothing to worry about

I think the coolest thing about paradox are they can only exist when there's missing context and once you have the context more paradox can be generated forever. All of experience is like a giant perspective gym.

Something that seems true about the culture war is that the right has fully internalized the fact that America now has two cultures. The left hasn't, so they haven't figured out how to be liberal and humane toward their opponents, which hamstrings everything that makes them strong

How to elevate "steward" types over "conquerer" types: We need shared systems of discernment! Psychotherapy is increasingly equipping ordinary people with the ability to spot dark triad personality types. At the same time, it's becoming more popular to make decisions based purely on vibe. ("The CEO interviewed me, and it seems like a great company, but his vibe was off.") These discernment abilities now need to combine with some sort of system that is able to allocate status – eg politics and religion. Why? Because right now being widely known as a sociopath does not actually affect your status that much. Of course, linking sociopathy to lower status could lead to unfortunate witchhunt dynamics. Haven't figure out that part yet! Elevating "steward" types just requires the reverse. I don't think there's the same sort of cultural work being done here yet. We're becoming more willing to avoid bad vibes, but there aren't really equally powerful norms around blessed vibes. Interestingly, early Christians developed something like a vocabulary of holy vibes: radiant faces, particular qualities of gaze, etc. – traditions of reading spiritual character from physical appearance. I think we'd benefit from something like this.
Relating this to power/influence: I think β€œconqueror” types (driven by an unchecked impulse to impose their vision on the world) have always gotten into power (in communities, businesses, governments). I wonder how we’d elevate more β€œsteward” types (wise boring people who hear feedback and care about the people they lead/influence)?

tiny top-level CLAUDE.md I have that I enjoy the fruits of many times a day (Unreasonable Effectiveness of HTML) -- # General Claude Code Preferences Whenever you have substantial info to present to me -- even just a detailed summary at the end of half an hour of work, with remaining open work -- make it an html file. It's way easier on my eyes and attention to read more visually-arranged pages rather than reading monospace white-on-black text. Quick decisions towards the start of a session should still be shown inline in the cli. Use html pages also for checklists where you need me to take multiple steps, eg configuring some authentication thing. For this and any other time I ask for html, favor local html files over making web-based artifacts; if I want to share it as an artifact I'll let you know.
