"Voucher loss also leads to homelessness. In a Vera Institute study of homeless families in NYC, researchers found that one-third of families entering homeless shelters had lost a Sec8 housing subsidy during the previous 5 yrs."

Black New Yorkers are 45% of NYCHA residents, 40% of NYC's eviction cases, and 44% of NYC’s homeless population. Mamdani’s privatizing public housing, underfunding Right to Counsel, and cutting housing assistance is a continuation of policies forcing out Black New Yorkers!
“The population of Black children and teenagers down by 19% from 2010 to 2019.”
New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani says New York has lost more than 200,000 Black New Yorkers over the past few decades and says it’s not for a lack of love for this city, but they just haven’t been able to afford New York.

As a Black New Yorker born and raised in the South, I’ve learned that the most dangerous racists aren’t Confederates in the South or Trump supporters on Long Island. They’re white liberals in NYC, Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco who don't believe they're racist!

For NYers who are actually interested in hearing *FROM THE TENANTS* affected by this proposed demolition & privatization, check out A Home Worth Fight For.
Hear it from the tenants themselves!

‼️ A must-read investigative piece on the current FEC NYCHA fight! Very thorough and insightful ‼️
A tenacious group of tenants is fighting a teardown plan in one of Manhattan's most desirable neighborhoods that could spell the end of public housing as we know it? I wrote for @newrepublic about their struggle and the fate of government-run homes in the US.

A NYCHA development in Williamsburg was privatized after $490 million in PACT renovations. Rents jumped from $600 to $1,600 a month. Residents were pushed out, evictions skyrocketed, and heat and water problems persisted despite the renovations.

1. Not “new NYCHA units”. Section 8 units that use federal funding to funnel profit into private developers.
2. Not 1,000 affordable units either. Just slightly below market rate value in one of the msot expensive neighborhoods in NYC
3. It’s actually 2,500 market rate units

kinda wild to see SMC/GW uncritically push pro-RAD/PACT talking points (something the right of DSA used to oppose). i’m no housing expert but i don’t think we should enthusiastically cheerlead these conversions. socialists should be wary of public-private partnerships by default.

Across the country, recent conversions of public housing have led to too many bad renovations and failed relocations to ignore. In NYC, independent analysis finds that private management has increased eviction rates and created poor living conditions for many tenants.

Map 2.7 shows where people entering the shelter system last lived or areas of NYC where residents are most vulnerable to eviction and homelessness. The highest risk areas also are the neighborhoods where many people with Section 8 vouchers live.
no section 8
save section 9

This article is great at dispelling the misinformation about the NYCHA demolitions put forth by Related Companies and spread by the YIMBY/real estate lobby and their allies on the right wing of DSA.

Here is how our so-called socialist gentrifying Mayor @NYCMayor feels about Fulton and Elliott Chelsea tenants, sending lapdog #CeaWeaver (and Leila Bozorg) to pretend to help and feign concern. The tenants are not having any of it… #NoDemolition #SaveSection9 #Nycha #Mamdani

Some NYCHA tenants hoped Mamdani would step in the way of what they see as a land grab. But the admin has supported the Fulton and Elliott-Chelsea plan and many more conversions across the system. Tenants are now battling not only NYCHA and partners but their socialist mayor.
