One week ago, I lost my grand-father. Beyond being the greatest grandpa on earth, he also lived an incredible life. Because I always thought that his story was a fantastic historical lesson related to what I research on, I want to share it. Thread on a European success story

How has the EU’s system for temporarily posting workers across borders affected labour markets?
New research finds it increased labour mobility, but reduced domestic employment in more exposed regions.

A major driver of tax evasion isn't just the tax rate but the reporting requirements, at least when it comes to wealth taxes. Our newly revised paper finds that how much you have to disclose matters at least as much as how much you owe 🧵 stantcheva.scholars.harvard.… [1/14]

Tax rates deserve the attention they get in the public debate. But what the government asks you to reveal for tax purposes can matter a lot too. Our paper on the French wealth tax shows how powerful information requirements can be. Summary here.👇

Cheap labor and lax labor regulations— not just productivity — shape trade competitiveness, even in the supposedly harmonized EU. Domestic labor and tax policy matter for globalization and how ``fair'' people perceive international competition to be.

Trump’s attack on US institutions, even if fully expected, is dispiriting, discombobulating and dangerous.
In this very difficult time, we have to remember one thing: This is not normal, and it should not be normalized.
If, as I hope, the US democracy survives and (somehow) recovers, then history books will judge those working with Trump and Republican lawmakers in the Senate and Congress enabling him harshly (and so should we). If US democracy does not survive, I don’t know what history books will be like.
