Personal news update 1/4 – finally retired from @NottmTrentUni @NTUSocSciences yesterday after 36+ years. Very excited to have accepted offer of Emeritus Professor to continue my writing & publishing plans (and began working on a new article today re youth and #GE2024).
Really interesting (and important) take on the triple lock and the wider issue of intergenerational relations/(in)equalities by @johnmcdonnellMP, that situates this discussion firmly within class relations/(in)equalities
There needs to be a greater understanding of the triple lock. The reason many of us supported its introduction was that it began to redress the loss of pension caused by Thatcher breaking the link between pensions and earnings. Despite the triple lock being in force for a decade the response I received to a Parliamentary question some months ago confirmed pensioners are still £50 a week worse off. We spend 5.7% of GDP on the pension compared with 10% in Germany, France and Spain, with 15% in Italy. The Triple Lock enables us to bring our pensions into line with European levels especially needed at a time when final salary pension schemes are increasingly being phased out. The false argument about inter generational fairness fails to recognise that the fight for pensions now protects the living standards of young people in the future and that immediate support for younger people should be secured by the fair taxation of wealth. Let’s not let opportunistic politicians and commentators divide young from old in this way.
Dogs are beautiful if we don’t programme them otherwise
This mistreated dog came to our shelter carrying deep fear from his past. At first, he wouldn’t eat, stayed curled in the corner, trembling and flinching at every little sound. He didn’t know how to trust or feel safe.
Then our gentle Pit Bull named Honey showed up... moving slowly, giving space, and quietly sharing food. The little dog began to open up, slowly learning what trust feels like, until finally he chose to sit close, finally feeling safe and not alone anymore. And for the first time, he felt what it meant to be loved. Honey the Pit Bull deserves recognition for his gentle, kind heart. ❤

“Universities should be a place of learning, not propaganda machines” - really interesting campaign emerging across US universities to protest against the Trump administration’s ideological attempt to control what is taught and studied theguardian.com/us-news/2025…
1/2 In historical terms, this represents a stunning victory for a left anti-establishment & anti-authoritarian candidate. And it may embolden others that Trumpism can be taken on and defeated with a brave & uncompromising democratic socialist programme. theguardian.com/us-news/live…
Nicely done Hugh Bonneville

Hugh Bonneville took advantage of a live TV interview at the premiere for #DowntonAbbeyTheGrandFinale to make a statement about Gaza. Watch the face of ITV News reporter Helen Keenan drop as he *goes there*.
I just learned about a pup who has suffered so much. She's on a long road to recovery and needs our help. Please consider donating or sharing her story. Every bit counts. gofund.me/dafb86d0
