I wonder if the #COVID19 pandemic will make medical schools reconsider the modality of video interviews. The financial barrier for travel to these interviews is real, and for some a hindrance that can be eliminated. Thoughts?🤔 #AcademicTwitter #MedStudentTwitter #medtwitter – at Gretna, LA

Let me say this. If doctors aren’t even getting appropriate PPE, I can GUARANTEE janitorial and food service staff (mostly black, Brown, poor, immigrant) are not. But no one is talking about it. That’s because of who they are. It’s WRONG. And racist af. #GetMePPE #COVID19

Given the circumstances surrounding #COVIDー19 some medical schools have transitioned to online interviews. It would be nice if this became a new normal. It sure would help many low-income and/or disadvantaged applicants have a fair shot.

The first drive through #COVID19 testing center just opened on the South Side. Meanwhile, ppl downtown have at least 4 sites they can get to with relative ease. This is racism. This is classism. Stop asking why Black people don’t trust doctors or medicine. It is not irrational.

Telling doctors to wear bandanas in a pandemic is like telling soldiers to fight wars with crayons. #COVID19 #coronavirus #doctors #medicine #publicvoices @TheOpEdProject

The argument that Step 1 was some people’s “only chance” at getting noticed by fancy/competitive programs is frustrating because way more people are barred from those opportunities because of cutoff scores. Using exceptions to make a point in a scientific community is so weird.

“Some would argue that I should focus on doctoring first, and then later, challenge the system. But that is not just incorrect; it is impossible.” So 👏🏽 powerful 👏🏽 This hit home on so many levels!! m.yale.edu/hd9 via @yalemed

It’s been a little over a month since my @statnews OpEd on leaving academics. My goal was to center and give voice to Black experiences in the workplace. Some have called it ‘a bad career move’, however, in my opinion, speaking truth to power can *never* be the wrong move. – at New York, USA

Accounts run by men receive roughly double the retweets of those run by women. Even online, we are talked for and talked over. Even online, men’s voices carry twice as much worth. It matters. When you see women writing about things that interest you, retweet us. It’s that simple.

I’m always amazed by how medical textbooks will drop a: “Black people are more likely to develop...” “African-Americans have the highest rates of...” With no mention whatsoever of the systemic factors that contribute to the disparate outcomes we observe.
