BJP may be is preparing to sacrifice Uttar Pradesh in the Assembly elections to secure a much larger political objective at the Centre. Not many will understand this calculation until it unfolds. The larger game is 2029. BJP could lose ground in the UP Assembly elections, allow a leadership transition and subsequently bring Yogi Adityanath into the Union Cabinet. This would also remove a major internal power centre from the state while accommodating him within the central leadership. My assessment is that BJP could actually improve its Lok Sabha performance in Uttar Pradesh in 2029 compared to 2024, even after a possible Assembly setback and before delimitation. The distinction is important. Losing a state election does not necessarily mean losing the national political narrative. Sometimes, a party is willing to absorb a state level setback to consolidate its position at the Centre. Yogi's possible elevation to the Union Cabinet could be part of that larger arrangement. Watch the political developments in Uttar Pradesh closely. The Assembly election may not tell the entire story.
