Is this the Rwanda you’re being sold?
@LewisHamilton @Ben_Sulayem
For those unfamiliar with Rwanda, this is Paul Kagame’s Kigali, where children share water with cattle. Yet he’s willing to pile on debt to impress Europe and polish his image. Funny how the regime sells progress abroad while children’s living conditions tell a very different story. #VisitRwanda

I would like to thank the Germany-based Kinyarwanda Real Talk Channel for conducting an in-depth interview with me almost three years after my retirement from the BBC Great Lakes. I hope the interview will help Rwandans understand who I am.
It enabled me to respond to the government smear campaign led by Minister @DrDamascene , even though I retired from service nearly three years ago.
It enabled me to refute the lie circulated by the Government of Rwanda that I was responsible for the BBC’s use of the term “Rwanda genocide” rather than “genocide against the Tutsi,” the terminology promoted by the Rwandan government.
I returned to my earlier life as a freelancer for BBC Swahili, when my Tutsi appearance gave me away on trips amid heightened tensions between Hutus and Tutsis following the RPF/RPA invasion in October 1990.
I recounted how my journalism affected my 3 sisters; they were targeted during the genocide because they were related to a brother accused of collaborating with the RPF rebels. Two died in the wilderness. The militias in my village hung photographs of me on trees and pierced them with spears, cursing because they could not find me.
After serving 10 years in prison, one of them came to our home to apologise. When I asked him whether he could have killed me, he replied, “Yes”. When I asked why, he said they had been told I was collaborating with RPF rebels.
I recounted how, after a reconciliation meeting in Kigali in 2007, my manager advised me to acquire British nationality. He said that, based on the meeting he had attended, he had concluded the government did not want me there.
I also recounted surviving a 2009 INTORE plot to have me dismissed during the genocide’s 15th anniversary. It coincided with the Great Lakes service’s suspension in April after it rejected the government’s demand to suppress a programme featuring Hutus who opposed collective apologies for the genocide against the Tutsi as a path to reconciliation. The government called the programme Tutsi genocide denial.
I recounted how, in 2014, Rwandan authorities used the BBC Two documentary ‘Rwanda Untold Story’ as a pretext to suspend the Great Lakes service indefinitely, even though it had no role in producing the documentary. I said they did so because the service had become a thorn in their disinformation strategy.
I discussed my mental well-being. The persistent challenges of covering Rwanda ultimately affected my mental health, and I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). On the advice of mental health professionals, I had to leave. I was unable to discuss my PTSD in detail because of restrictions in the statement of agreement I signed with the BBC, after my managers had distanced themselves from me.
However, page 1 of the Human Rights Watch report “Join Us or Die”: Rwanda’s Extraterritorial Repression accurately describes my circumstances at the time of my retirement.
When I met Clementine de Montjeye, a senior Great Lakes researcher at Human Rights Watch, on 22 August 2022, I was still taking medication for PTSD prescribed by a psychiatrist at Memorial Hospital and carefully following the psychologist’s advice at Erith Hospital. I didn’t realise that, as she listened, Clementine was also observing me:
“When a Rwandan journalist living in London, United Kingdom, sat down on a bench in a public park, in August 2022, the first thing he said, after nervous introductions, was: “My wife didn’t want me to come. We have to be careful.” His eyes darting around to check if anyone was eavesdropping, he explains how some of his relatives in Rwanda are under surveillance and have been marginalized because of his work. In London, he lives afraid and isolated, and has suffered from panic attacks and depression. He has a flak jacket and security cameras at home. “I’ve stopped attending any gatherings of Rwandans. I never invite Rwandans around to my house anymore. But now, I am attacked online, he said.”

RWANDA AFTER KAGAME: WHY DOES THE FUTURE DEPEND ON ONE MAN?
@BURIKANTU_1 a Rwandan social media influencer, says Rwanda’s youth fear for their future without pres. @paulKagame Should this be celebrated as a sign of confidence in his leadership, or treated as a serious warning about the political system he has built?
After 32 years in power, if young Rwandans cannot imagine a peaceful, prosperous future without one man, it raises fundamental questions about the strength of the country’s institutions.
A functioning state must have independent and capable institutions, security forces, the judiciary, public administration and other governing bodies that serve the nation and its people, rather than depend on one individual.
Following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, Rwanda needed lasting institutions, sustainable economic development, infrastructure, professional security services and accountable governance. Yet, when the country’s future appears inseparable from Kagame’s continued presence, it raises concerns about whether these achievements rest on strong institutions or on the authority and image of one leader.
@PaulKagame should not interpret young people’s statements such as “We trust you” alongside “We fear the future without you” as unconditional praise. If the next generation fears what happens when a president leaves office, that is not proof of a successful system; it is a warning that the system has failed to inspire confidence in its own continuity.
After decades of the same leadership, many young Rwandans have never known another president. When institutions appear to follow one person rather than operate independently under the law, and peaceful transfers of power remain unfamiliar, uncertainty about the future becomes understandable.
Dear @rpfinkotanyi, a country’s stability must never depend on one man’s permanence. The real measure of leadership is building institutions strong enough to preserve peace, security and development long after the leader has left office. Rwanda belongs to its people, and its future must be bigger than any individual.

🇷🇼 Who is protecting the rights of workers building Rwanda’s major infrastructure projects?
Construction workers employed by NKT Group at the Bugesera International Airport project have come forward with serious issues concerning their working conditions.
According to their testimonies, the workers were promised payments that were never provided, suffered from hunger and a lack of adequate food, had no proper sleeping or washing facilities, and were subsequently told to leave after raising their concerns.
@RwandaLabour, Minister @J_Uwizeye and the @BugeseraDistr Labour Inspectorate must investigate, hear the workers' testimonies, verify their employment conditions and ensure that no worker faces retaliation for speaking out.
What concrete steps will be taken to protect these workers and hold all responsible parties accountable?

🚨 4% English proficiency after nearly 30 years of RPF rule: who failed Rwanda’s education system?
RECOMMANDATION.
@GovernanceRw reports that only 4% of primary teachers meet the intermediate English proficiency level, against a 95% target. After nearly 30 years of RPF rule, how can Rwanda build a knowledge-based economy when its education system struggles with such basic foundations?
The government @RwandaGov switched from French to English without adequately preparing teachers, and the consequences are falling on students. While privileged families can afford private schools offering international curricula, poorer children risk being left behind. Free education means little if children leave school unable to read and write.
The solution is not propaganda or denial, but investment: establish free, affordable-access language centres in every sector, offering daytime and evening classes for teachers, parents and other citizens. Provide qualified instructors, learning materials and practical English training. Introduce transparent, merit-based incentives for public servants who demonstrate proficiency in multiple relevant languages. These measures would expand access, motivate language learning and strengthen public services.
Education must equip every child to solve national problems and compete globally not deepen inequality. When a government refuses to acknowledge policy failures and correct them, an entire generation pays the price.
