Jaffe eventually realized the name had to change. One developer printed out a list of ancient Greek names, and Jaffe highlighted Julius, Parthenius, and Maximus, but none felt quite right. Joe Ziegler, former game director of Marathon, revealed that Bungie faced significant internal disagreements during the development of Marathon. Ziegler joined the project midway through development after being approached by friends at Bungie, including Justin Truman, the studio’s now-former head. He initially came on board as a consultant, but the team eventually needed more substantial help. When Ziegler asked developers about their vision for the game, he discovered plenty of ideas but also considerable disagreement. “Sometimes teams quickly reach a consensus, and everyone knows what they’re working toward. Other times, people’s ideas about their work are completely disconnected. While working on this project, I saw that although we had a clear direction in some areas, there were still a lot of disagreements.” Despite these challenges, Ziegler described Bungie as a studio without a big ego, emphasizing its openness to outside ideas and willingness to bring new talent into its projects.
