Replying to @NYCMayor
@NYCMayor we like how you’re fixing problems reported on social media. Here’s one: please resolve PortSide’s real estate saga and bring #economicjustice to RedHook.
We won an EDC RFP of 2007, and they promised us a permanent home but did not deliver.
It’s a long story, but in terms of your focus: the EDC continually creates impediments with the kind of red tape and abusive landlord treatment you want to change.
Recently, the EDC put out an RFEI to do something they have blocked us from doing for years: create a pipeline to marine careers for NYCHA residents from #RedHook and #Gowanus.
PortSide should get the space to do this because the EDC promised a permanent PortSide as a community benefit to Red Hook.
Because we are best suited to make this pipeline since we are close to this community and to the working waterfront. We educate K-20 already.
Because the maritime community has offered us curriculum and partnership many times over the years to create this career pipeline. We have partners now.
Because there’s space available where the EDC promised us a permanent home, the Pier 11 shed in Atlantic Basin, next to our historic ship #MaryWhalen. DutchX moved out.
Because we are award-winning. Innovative. Impactful. Respected. Beloved.
Time to fix this story of economic injustice.
Thanks. Standing by.

More than 11,500 men and women are memorialized at the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument.
"This event will also recognize the broader story of those who contributed to the American cause—including the vital support of France, Spain, the Netherlands; the Irish and Irish Americans; and the service and sacrifice of free and enslaved Black men and women whose stories form an important part of our Revolutionary history."
"Together, these stories remind us that the struggle for American independence crossed national, racial, and cultural boundaries and was sustained by people from many different backgrounds."

How can we get people to do a better job of keeping litter off our streets?! Here's what the water around the #MaryWhalen looks like around midday Tuesday 9/29/26 after last weekend's nor'easter.
During storms, litter blows directly into the harbor or goes down into street storm drains and out into the harbor because of our combined sewer system.

New Yorkers: the storm is still underway, and quiet stretches can give way to strong gusts at any moment.
Winds are bringing down trees, loosening facades and scaffolding, and knocking down power lines across the city. If you're outside, use caution in parks and anywhere with trees, keep clear of scaffolding, cranes, and construction sites, and stay far away from anything it touches including cars, fences, and puddles. Never try to move a tree or branch that's tangled in wires. Watch for loose signs, awnings, and debris blowing off buildings. Call 911 if there’s a life safety issue for trees and power lines.
Hazards will remain after the storm ends, so continue to exercise caution when getting around.
Best seat in the house! Not! Another reminder that the EDC thinks it's a good idea to put thousands of condos in BMT..

These videos were shot from the Mary Whalen around high tide this morning (8:20am). The compilation explains flooding, CSOs, tides, and how to get free data from our Davis Weather weather station. See also, the resiliency section in our virtual museum RedHookWaterStories.
Today, the wind gusts are also high enough to blow big debris and take down branches and trees, so take care going out or avoid that unless really necessary.
