"We have little faith that the Winnipeg Police Service can handle a hub for our missing loved ones. Families of missing persons feel time and time again that the police do not prioritize their cases and lack proper effort and cooperation with communities."

In this year's budget, all of recreation has a budget of $60M, with $46M coming from the city.
Compare that to the police budget: $327M in spending, with $281M from the city.
Cops get 6x the funding as rec. That's why stuff like this keeps happening.

"What should happen is we, as one of the shareholders, and the other two shareholders should be engaging with the not-for-profit groups," he said. "The private sector is only offering us medium-market rents, which are quite high."

Gillingham claims that the $650,000 a year to operate this essential public washroom 24/7 isn't available.
Yet the City plans to increase its spending on police by $8.3 mil this year. There is PLENTY of money for this kind of thing.
CUT THE WPS BUDGET.

Above guidelines rent increases (an average of 9% in 2022, some as high as 137%! - during a ‘rent-freeze’) push tenants out of their homes and deepen Winnipeg’s housing crisis. 60,000+ MB tenant households have faced AGIs in the past 3 years.

Portage Place needs a safety plan that:
Takes a holistic and preventative approach, as opposed to a carceral and reactionary approach
Takes into account the entire community’s long term safety
Places special emphasis on the safety of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirits
This is from an incident between security guards at portage place mall and an #indigenous man in a wheelchair. The security guards shouldn't be putting their hands on anyone, including a disabled person. #Winnipeg
