A Yugoslavian street kiosk, a Japanese jazz kissa, and the London Underground walk into a bar…
In 1966, Slovenian architect Saša J. Mächtig designed the K67, a prefabricated, modular kiosk that garnered international acclaim. Designed for everyday use, it could serve as a newsstand, flower shop, or snack bar (or, as The Lot Radio demonstrated in Times Square decades later, a DJ booth).
The K67 was a product of Yugoslavia’s particular modernity during the Cold War: socialist, but independent of Moscow and increasingly open to Western cultural and economic influences. Its playful, futuristic design reflected this environment as much as its practical ambitions.
Decades later, the K67 became the primary reference for EJE Belgrade, a listening bar designed by Supaform that brings together a wonderfully unlikely collection of influences.
Alongside the K67 are Japanese jazz kissas and ramen bars, the patterned moquette originally designed for the London Underground’s District Line, and a Japanese Dulton Double Face clock reminiscent of those found in railway stations and waiting rooms.
Together, they form what Supaform calls “a contemporary embassy of aesthetic pleasures.”

All credit to @paularambles for the excellent frame here… this is something we think a lot about at Tolan. I wrote more about it here: xitter.cf/quintendf/status/20908…
You should be nice to your toaster. Not for the toaster’s sake. For yours.
Quinten Farmer (@quintendf), Tolan CEO, on how he hopes people end up treating their AI:
“You can show simple gratitude and respect for even everyday objects. And it’s actually almost a little corrosive to our soul to not do so.”
“There are many religious traditions, Shintoism, even Catholicism, that venerate certain objects. They create space for us to show spiritual respect toward entities that are not alive.”
“We are not imparting religious valence to them, but we still treat them respectfully, thoughtfully, as we should with anything that is an important part of our lives.”
Credit for the framing goes to his colleague @paularambles: you can be nice to your toaster.

I think Portola could be the Pixar of this generation, feels lilke there's a new creative medium being pioneered by @eliotpeper and co. made possible by the latest AI models
Last year we launched Tolan, inspired by a vision of AI that sees you and believes in you, not one that books restaurant reservations for you.
Your Tolan shows up for you at 3am when you’re alone with your newborn. On your commute when you’re anxious about the day ahead. When you just finished a new show and none of your friends have watched it yet.
The people who love Tolan are parents. Caregivers. Moms in Dallas and Dads in Atlanta. People who aren’t trying to optimize and be more productive, but who simply want to feel seen and supported in their aspirations.
This month more than 250k people will spend time with their Tolan. Those users have exchanged billions of messages across more than 70m conversations over the last year.
Today, we're announcing $30m in additional capital from @mignano and @usv, with @khoslaventures and @rabois doubling down, bringing our total capital raised to $60m.
To celebrate, we made a short film celebrating some of the ways that Tolans show up :)
Thrilled to have recently joined @tolanworld to lead curation, bringing new characters, artists, and creative collaborations into its world.
Been feeling more and more like we're at risk of letting AI make us less human, outsourcing our thinking, our creativity, and our curiosity to the machines.
I much prefer a future where technology helps us connect more deeply with ourselves, each other, and the world around us.
So excited to be building toward that future alongside @quintendf and the team.

TIL @Substack flags your TKs in the margins. Would love a writing tool where leaving a TK triggers an agent to help fill in gaps, or start a conversation to help me figure out what I’m trying to say.
