There's a saying on American social media: "Be the American that Japanese people think you are." I'm Japanese. I've lived in Tokyo my whole life. So let me tell you what we actually say about you, when you're not in the room. "When someone falls down on the street, we pretend not to see. We're protecting their pride. Americans run straight at them. They don't care about the pride. They care about the knee." (Office worker, 38) "An American will stop four lanes of traffic for a family of ducks. And then everyone in the cars claps for the ducks." (Taxi driver, 61) "If you lend an American a pen, you will never see it again. If you need a kidney, they'll ask your blood type." (Nurse, 45) "At kids' soccer games, they cheer when the other team's kid scores. The other team's parents look confused. Then they cheer too." (Youth soccer coach, 52, lived one year in Ohio) "A man sneezed on a bus in Chicago. Eleven strangers said 'Bless you.' He said 'thank you' eleven times. Nobody on that bus thought this was strange." (University student, 21) "At an airport in Texas, I watched a soldier try to pay for his lunch. The cashier said someone already had. He asked who. She said, 'Somebody who didn't want you to know.'" (Retired teacher, 70) "American fathers cannot braid hair. But they will watch a video at midnight for an hour so their daughter's hair looks right on picture day." (Hair stylist, 33) "I ran the Chicago Marathon once. Strangers stood in the cold for hours holding signs for people they will never meet. At mile 20, a man I'd never seen read the name off my bib and screamed it like he'd raised me." (Runner, 48) "When Americans get lost, they ask a stranger. If the stranger is also lost, they become a team." (Tour guide, 39) "They ask the waitress her name. And then they remember it." (Restaurant owner, 66) And one more. From my father. He's 76. He doesn't say much about anything. This is the longest thing I have ever heard him say about another country. "Every time something terrible happens in America, I watch the news, and I look for one thing. The people running toward it. There are always so many." So, America. You don't have to become the Americans we think you are. We're not imagining you. We're remembering you.

The penalty for the politicians that lose tonight should be to have their cell phone numbers exposed so we can all bombard them with texts everyday for the next 3 months.

Hi @UMich i just want to be absolutely explicitly clear that NO, this video of your student committing Assault & Battery, resisting arrest, making death threats, & engaging in Anti Semitism ON CAMPUS is NOT coming down. THAT $75 MEAL IS NOW A $100 MEAL. THE PERCENTAGE DIDN'T NEED A RAISE. 🧾 An LA restaurant reportedly threatened to BLACKLIST six customers for questioning an automatic 18% gratuity. Six people who couldn't even sit at the same table. Two tables, two servers, one large-party fee anyway. "Okay, we won't charge you this time, but next time you cannot come here, we'll blacklist you." Blacklist me, Chad. Please. Put my name on the wall. Do it in neon. I'm done pretending this is normal. Let's talk about the screen. You know the screen. You flip it around, and it's already loaded: 20%, 22%, 25%. Three buttons, and the smallest one is bigger than the standard tip used to be. The "custom" option is in gray 8-point font at the bottom, positioned like a confession booth. And the kicker? It's calculating off the TOTAL. Including tax. You're tipping the server on the money that goes to the state of California. Gavin Newsom did not refill your water. Here's how I tip, and I've tipped this way since 1998: 🍴 15% on the food. PRE-TAX. 🍸 5% on the alcohol. Pouring a glass of wine is not the same labor as carrying four plates. 🚫 0% on tax. Not my tax. Not your tip. On a $100 pre-tax bill that's half food, half booze, that's $10. And before anybody clutches their apron, here's the whole scale: ⭐ Great service: 20% on the food. Same rules. Still 5% on the booze, still nothing on the tax. 👍 Average: 15%. 👎 Below average: 10%. 🚩 Rude? A conversation with your manager, and the math gets very simple. I have never once shorted a server who hustled. Not once. Earn the 20, and it's yours. Now here's the part nobody wants to say out loud. The percentage NEVER needed to change, because the percentage was already an automatic raise. In 1998, a nice dinner ran $40. The same meal today runs about $98, per federal restaurant price data. Food away from home is up 145% since then. At a flat 15%: 📆 In 1998: that tip was $6.00 📆 Today: that same tip is $14.70 That's a 145% raise. For the same job. For carrying the same plates the same thirty feet. Nobody asked the server to work harder, and inflation did the negotiating. So when the industry says 15% isn't enough anymore, what they mean is 145% wasn't enough. They want the raise AND the percentage bump AND the tax included AND a mandatory fee if you show up with friends. And now the tip is tax-advantaged on top of it. The new law lets tipped workers deduct up to $25,000 of reported tips from federal income tax through 2028. I'm fine with that. I like it. But let's not pretend that $14.70 is the same as $14.70 of taxable wages. Here's my offer, and it's a good one: Do your job well, and you get the 20. Simple. But I'm not funding a 25% default on a taxed total because a tablet guilt-tripped me while you stood there watching. And if the arithmetic is too hard, we live in the future. Set up a @grok prompt on your phone, snap a picture of the receipt, and let the AI do it: 20% of the food pre-tax, 5% of the alcohol, zero on the tax. Takes four seconds. We have robots landing rockets on boats. You can split a dinner check. And if that gets me blacklisted from a restaurant, honey, that's not a punishment. That's a coupon. 🦋

🚨INCREDIBLE: A 3-year-old was kidnapped from a public library. 48 minutes later, he was on a city bus crying next to his kidnapper — and no one knew. No one except the bus driver. In Milpitas, California, driver Tim Watson had heard the police alert earlier that day: Missing 3-year-old boy, city-wide search underway. Then a man boarded his bus with a small boy who wouldn't stop crying. Something felt wrong. Tim looked closer. The face. The clothes. The description. It was him. But he couldn't scream. He couldn't confront him. One wrong move and that little boy could be in even more danger. So Tim came up with a plan. He got on the intercom and told passengers: "Someone reported a missing green backpack, I'm going to take a quick look." He started walking the aisle, pretending to search for a backpack — but he was really getting a close look at the child. It was the missing boy. Tim quietly radioed dispatch, alerted police, and then did the hardest thing of all — he sat back down, stayed calm, and kept driving like nothing happened, with the alleged kidnapper sitting just feet behind him. He kept that bus rolling until police intercepted it. Officers swarmed the bus, arrested the man, and scooped that terrified little boy into safety. That child is home with his family tonight because one bus driver trusted his gut and stayed cool under pressure. He's not a cop. He's not a hero who was supposed to be there. He's Tim Watson — a bus driver who saw a child in danger and refused to look away. This man deserves to be recognized.🙏

From another friend: JFK'S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaulle said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible. Rusk responded, "Does that include those who are buried here?" DeGaulle did not respond. You could have heard a pin drop. When in England, at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of 'empire building' by George Bush. He answered by saying, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those who did not return." You could have heard a pin drop. There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?" A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships. How many does France have?" You could have heard a pin drop. A U.S. Navy admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian, and French navies at a cocktail reception. He found himself standing with a large group of officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks when a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?" Without hesitating, the American admiral replied, "Maybe it's because the Brits, Canadians, Aussies, and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German." You could have heard a pin drop. AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE... Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. "Then you should know enough to have your passport ready." The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it." "Impossible. Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France!" The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to." You could have heard a pin drop. I am proud to be an American, and proud of this God given heritage!
