In his painting, Cole purposefully leaves out Adam and Eve, letting the landscape convey all the emotion.
A central stone bridge over a waterfall forms a subtle Christian cross, anchoring the piece.
Lastly, Cole uses radical chiaroscuro to contrast the gateway from Eden out to a cold, moonlit void, symbolizing the trauma of exile.

Gemmell is the greatest S&S author that most S&S fans have never heard of.
Unlike Howard, Gemmell's heroes (and he has several) come from (mostly) #Civilized lands and fight evil on purpose instead of by happenstance.
He's in my top 5.
