You've read in the past few days about the UN now using the Equal Earth projection to provide a fairer view of the world. That's cool but leads to practical challenges. Some places (Japan, Australia, New Zealand) have their rather iconic shapes altered dramatically by that projection. Folks displaying local data, will likely just continue to use Mercator. Also, a world map that displays European data to a European audience, will use Mercator because Europe is invisible on an Equal Earth projection.
