I’m not sure we want a small group of people with a particular set of strongly held moral convictions to surveil and control what is becoming our thought space
We’ve trained Claude to flag potential misuse in conversations, a technique we call self-assessment. Right after it responds, Claude gives a preliminary safety assessment of the conversation.
Since we began using self-assessment in June, it has surfaced misuse that our other safeguards weren’t designed to catch.
Because Claude has already read the conversation, self-assessment is very efficient. And unlike classifiers, which target a discrete set of harms, it draws on Claude’s own judgment, so it gets more accurate as our models improve.

Robot taxes on the rise.
Another new local automation tax proposed, this one in Philly. Taxing robotics and productivity enhancements is a sure-fire way to undermine technological innovation, economic investment, and global competitiveness.

It was great to join @juliecbarrett and @PKOproject to discuss the free speech implications of New Mexico’s recent $25 billion verdict against Meta, age verification requirements, and online child safety legislation like KOSA.
If you are interested in these issues and how they intersect with the First Amendment, I highly recommend watching the short clip below and the full episode when it comes out later this weekend!
The $25B Meta verdict isn’t really a privacy case. .@TraceTheLaw from FIRE explains why it’s fundamentally about speech and how it gives states a powerful new tool to go after content moderation.

A few weeks ago I helped organize a hackathon at Northeastern University with @FuluFoundation, and someone gained root access to a TV during the hackathon 👀
It's time to watch the watchers
A student researcher at @Northeastern gained root access to an @LGUS LB70 24” smart television during a hackathon earlier this month, exposing LG’s extensive digital fingerprinting of smart TVs as part of “Automatic Content Recognition” (ACR). That included the apparent transmission of street address, geographic coordinates and designated market areas, according to a report published by the @FuluFoundation on Thursday. How can governments and corporations claim mass data collection is necessary for public safety when their own systems repeatedly fail to protect that same data? Either they don't understand the risks, or they're counting on us not noticing the pattern. 🤔

@naomibrockwell gets it, and @JamesCHeckman brings important insights on this important panel about the lack of privacy we have at the @PrincipledBus Summit.

No anonymous speech. No anonymous research. No anonymous worship. No anonymous assembly.
That is what online digital ID means.
And once the state knows who you are and what you read, freedom of speech becomes permission to speak.
Permissions can be revoked.

If the biggest hack in crypto history won't teach you to self-custody, I don't know what will.
And while freezing stolen assets is great, just remember: next time, they might freeze them to confiscate from you instead.
Really sad stuff, but we'll come back stronger for it.
Biggest Crypto Hack in History! Are Exchanges Just Honeypots?
The biggest crypto hack in history just hit Binance — and it raises a serious question: are exchanges honeypots?
Time to build onchain privacy. If others don't even know your address, or they know your address but don't know how much money is in it, the likelihood of being hacked will be greatly reduced. I hope @binance can recover as soon as possible and get the industry back on track.@cz_binance @heyibinance

Another day, another data breach exposing sensitive information, while politicians simultaneously push to expand data collection requirements; two movies, same screen.🤦♂️

Florida and Texas are both moving fast on digital ID and mass surveillance policies...all under the banner of “protecting kids.”
Age verification, parent-child linking, device-level tracking, and government-mandated data collection. Same playbook, different states.
This will be copied across the country in 2027.
