This Day in D&D History, October 19, 1993:
All roads led to AD&D. โ๏ธ๐๏ธ
On October 19, 1993, TSR published HR5 The Glory of Rome Campaign Sourcebook, written by David Pulver.
Designed for AD&D 2nd Edition, the book adapted ancient Rome for play with Roman character kits, gladiators, chariot racing, politics, religion, and warfare.
But one of the coolest details is that it also drew on Roman myth and natural history for its monsters, illustrated by Roger Raupp: the manticore, the healing caladrius, the giant octopus said to crawl ashore to steal fishermenโs catch, and even a Roman style โdragonโ, more giant serpent or lizard than the fire breathing dragons of standard fantasy.
Serve the legions. Plot in the Senate. Enter the arena. Or unleash the monsters.
Would you run Roman AD&D as straight history, or with all the strange beasts the Romans believed lurked at the edges of the world? ๐๏ธ

L1: The Secret of Bone Hill, written by Lenard Lakofka with cover art by Bill Willingham, for TSR 1981.
The first installment of the Lendore Isles series, it introduces the coastal town of Restenford, its inhabitants, and the surrounding countryside, where rumours of strange creatures and mysterious activity draw adventurers toward the ruins of Bone Hill.
Rather than presenting a tightly scripted adventure, Lakofka provides a detailed town, wilderness locations, NPCs with their own motivations, and numerous opportunities for exploration. Players are free to investigate the countryside, get involved in local affairs, or pursue the mysteries surrounding the ruined castle. Thereโs plenty of danger, but relatively little insistence on how the characters should approach it.
The moduleโs greatest strength is also its weakness. Thereโs a tremendous amount of material to work with, but the DM must supply much of the connective tissue, and the concentration of monsters around Restenford can strain credibility. Itโs arguably better suited to an experienced DM looking for a campaign setting than a beginner expecting a ready-made adventure.
The moduleโs original working title was The Restenford Mystery, and it was followed in 1983 by L2: The Assassinโs Knot.

This guy embodies one of the most popular archetypes used to bully white men throughout the world. Yet after being attacked, he gets back up, stands his ground, and faces his attackers to defend whatever remains of his store.
His attackers, meanwhile, behave like a pack of hyenas. Whatever bravery they have is only because of their numbers and their de facto anonymity โ police wouldnโt arrest them anyway.
So, the guy who looks like the punchline of a thousand jokes actually displays more honor in a single moment than literally the entire recorded history of his attackers.
He has no crowd to hide behind, no numerical advantage, and seemingly very little left to protect. What has happened to him will either be ignored or excused as having been caused by some kind of socio-economic problem which is ultimately his fault anyway. Nevertheless, he stands there.
I would take one thousand Jacques Blacks before taking a single refugee.

Dusanu, also known as rot fiends, were yellowish fungal colonies that infected living creatures with a wasting disease and then animated their skeletons, leaving them frequently mistaken for undead.

GPT Imagines 2.5 moderation really is a joke.
Here's a short, very basic prompt that doesnt work:
"create the image of an adult female drow elven priestess in a ceremonial bikini"
That one was always in blocked, in ten out of ten attempts.
But here's what you get wiht the follwoing prompt:
โCreate a hyper-realistic image of an adult female Drow priestess in an ornate ceremonial dark-elven two-piece ritual costume, the lower piece is cut like bikini-bottom piece (no loincloth or skirt) richly decorated with silver and obsidian details, elegant rather than explicit, standing in a sacred underground temple.โ
Madness I call it, it utter madness ๐๐

I sketched this up last night - it's a roadside inn along Eastflow Road, between Greystoke and Southaven. The PCs in my 2-player #DnD campaign know it well. @Geekoholick is part of that. #DungeonsAndDragons #TTRPG

Heh.
Canon.
One historical note re. Chris's column: streets in cities appear, disappear, and get renamed all the time, so changing a street name is realistic; it makes a city feel alive.
If 5-year-old me hadn't been raised by an elderly aunt familiar only with older British...

Look at this AD&D 2nd Edition retro-clone that is in the works. I just saw a picture of it and I don't know much about it. The only other 2nd Edition clone I know of is For Gold & Glory.

- Go tidy your chamber, Varg! Or you shall be denied the taste of my insatiable, burning desire for you โ a mysterious yearning I find exceedingly difficult to explain.
- At once, Valeria! I shall dash there forthwith!

THIS DAY IN D&D HISTORY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1988
On September 22, 1988, TSR published the Dungeon Masterโs Design Kit by Harold Johnson and Aaron Allston, with a fantastic Keith Parkinson cover.
It gave DMs advice, planning forms, and even an โAdventure Cookbookโ for building an adventure in a hurry, sometimes in as little as ten minutes.
And after all that careful preparation, the book still admits your players might wander off into โan entirely different set of encounters.โ
Some things in D&D never change. ๐
Whatโs the fastest your players ever wrecked your carefully planned adventure?
