The Big Island of Hawaii certainly dodged a close call with Hurricane Nolo. While the prolonged easterly fetch did lead to heavy rain on the eastern side of the island, a farther north storm would've led to far more significant impacts from a near-stationary hurricane.
I have paused live coverage for the night but will be resuming first thing in the morning!

Tropical Storm Nolo is expected to strengthen into a hurricane today as it moves northward to north northeastward, potentially making its closest approach to the Big Island as a major hurricane on Saturday. Significant heavy rainfall and flooding impacts are expected, with 15 to 20 inches of rain and isolated totals up to 35 inches possible on the Big Island, while Maui could receive 5 to 10 inches with isolated totals up to 20 inches. Tropical storm force winds and large, damaging waves are also possible, and a Hurricane Watch remains in effect for the Big Island. Residents should complete preparations for heavy rain and flooding today, review emergency plans, monitor official forecasts and follow instructions from local authorities, including evacuation orders if issued. BREAKING: A Hurricane Warning is now in effect for Kauai County and The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to French Frigate Shoals.

Tropical Storm Warning: Kauai County, including the islands of Kauai and Niihau.
Hurricane Lowell is 115 mph, about 455 miles southwest of Lihue, Hawaii. The center is forecast to pass near Kauai late Monday.
This is the first hurricane warning for Kauai since Douglas in 2020, and Hawaii's second in three weeks after Lala. Lala was an 80 mph Category 1 when it brushed the Big Island. Lowell is 115 mph right now.
Winds and surf arrive before the center does. If you are in the warning area, finish your preparations today and listen to local officials.

Will have to monitor in the coming days…but the threat for another tropical system impacting Hawaii may be returning by this weekend.
