A better way both for listeners and producers’ careers was the road not taken which I advocated at parting and before of combining 5Live overnight with @bbcworldservice output. Salute to the first show on any BBC network to truly follow the sun. What’s old is new again.

Roughly 30 years and millions of happy listeners later, those who argued that @tweetallnight (Up All Night) was a waste of money finally have their way. My sympathy to those in @bbc5live management forced into this shotgun marriage and to all ex-colleagues losing jobs.

I’ve written a note to Chris Bryant, who is not my MP, asking him to obtain Foreign Office funding for short wave transmission to Russia of BBC World Service in Russian, 24 hours a day. Their coverage of Ukraine has been superb. I’m no good at campaigns, but maybe you could help

Trump is directly responsible for this insurrection and violence. He needs to be removed from office immediately. It is the Constitutional responsibility of Vice President Pence and the cabinet to exercise the power granted them by the 25th amendment.

McCain was probably bound to lose anyway (his lead at this point reflected a Palin/convention bounce, at least in part) but a reminder that basically the entire financial crisis played out between this point in the campaign and the election in 2008. News can still happen.

This shouldn’t pass without comment, not least for the critical work of @EthanZ - a principled and inspiring leader. If there is something we need more of right now it is civic rather than commercial technologies. Hopefully MIT will find other ways to explore this
At the end of August 2020, the Center for Civic Media at MIT will close down. Established in 2007 as the Center for Future Civic Media, the Center has been a longstanding collaboration between @medialab and @mit_cmsw at MIT. (full post by @EthanZ at civic.mit.edu/)

The most memorable line of the DNC so far, from Kristin Urquiza, whose father died of the coronavirus: “My dad was a healthy 65-year-old. His only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump, and for that, he paid with his life.”

If you want to understand how catastrophically Trump has failed in this response, consider that the first cases were in the US and South Korea on the same day. And because of testing, honesty, and a swift government response, South Korea has already flattened the curve.
The first coronavirus case in the U.S. and South Korea was detected on the same day. By late January, Seoul had medical companies starting to work on a diagnostic test — one was approved a week later. Today, the U.S. isn’t even close to meeting test demand reut.rs/3daq8mF
