⛪ Belarus has blessed its first AI-generated religious icon The icon depicts Carlo Acutis, an Italian teenager who was canonized in 2025 and became known as the “Cyber Apostle.” The icon was installed in a Catholic church in Novolukoml, where Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz blessed it on October 11. The move has sparked debate on social media, with some believers arguing that AI-generated images should not be used for prayer.

Since this apparently “got out of hand”… If you’re looking for dad jokes and puns, cute pictures of dogs and kids, or ramblings on faith, nerd stuff, or the inevitable necessity of a Butlerian Jihad, you’re in the right place. God bless and be good to one another!
Reminds me of that joke about how a physicist dies and goes to Heaven, upon which he asks God why He made the speed of light as arbitrary as 186,282 miles per second. “What do you mean?” God replies. “The speed of light is 1.”

Yeah yeah I’m an American, I use miles instead of meters, I get it. We’re trying to appreciate the beauty of the universe here!

A finite but effectively limitless amount of money that would allow you to live a life of luxury that most people could never even dream of. Vs… Crash the economy forever after a few months
Mathematics. Green button = You instantly receive $1 billion (tax free). Red button = You receive $1 that doubles every day. You can press just once. Which do you press?

Here's a use case I like. Imagine your grandmother sitting alone in an assisted living facility. You create a program that shows up on her TV that connects to your family group text. Each time someone in the family uploads a picture or makes a comment via text (for example, uploads a picture of their baby and says 'doesn't his outfit look cute'), that comment is read aloud by the AI who looks exactly like that person. We are really the ones communicating via text, but the text turns into a live version of us via this program, and provides an immersive way for us to "hang out" when we're not there, and not on a phone call.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. thelettersfromleo.com/p/nyt-…

I felt like MH was too mild but this kind of stuff makes me feel extremely grateful for it.
Note well, apparently Anthropic tried very hard to get the Vatican to alter the text of "Magnifica Humanitas" just prior to its release so that it would not deny AI personhood.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

“At last, we have created the Human Mimicry Machine from the classic scifi novel Do Not Create the Human Mimicry Machine”
Introducing Griffin, the first model to pass the video Turing test. 48% of people who talked to it live thought it was a real human. Previous systems have had a pass rate <3%. It is #1 on NVIDIA's benchmark for full-duplex AI video. It’s the first Human Interaction Model (HIM).

The 48% figure and "video Turing test" claim are from Tavus's own study of 54 one-minute calls, not independently verified or using a standard protocol. Griffin-Lite leads NVIDIA's VideoFDB benchmark on their public leaderboard. cellcog.ai/blog/tavus-gri… research.nvidia.com/labs/amri/proj… tech-ish.com/2026/10/02/tav…

I’m agnostic (albeit quite skeptical) about whether AI can truly be conscious. I’m quite certain, however, that folks like this are not.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Omg!!!! Sam Harris pondering: “Why can’t we eat babies? What’s wrong with eating babies? If we have extra babies around and nobody wants them, why can’t we eat them?” Sick demonic bastard from hell….
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The 2014 clip is from Harris's TYT interview with Cenk Uygur. He used 'why can't we eat babies?' as a philosophy seminar hypothetical to probe ethical foundations, noting it sounds insane out of context and makes him look bad. He was not advocating it. youtube.com/watch?v=WVl3BJ… youtube.com/watch?v=NTtMVs…
