Anti-austerity was the correct viewpoint for the specific situation of 2009-2011, but the political movements that sprung up around that are idea are mostly people who don’t believe in any kind of budget constraint or tradeoffs not people with a nuanced macroeconomic view.

The bloodless neoliberals at the IMF will tell you "don't spend 15% of GDP subsidizing fuel" but also "don't cancel it on a random Monday morning". Who can work through these contradictions
Good, short summary of price liberalization and the lifting of subsidies in Syria between 2005 and 2010, from Marwa Daoudy’s The Origins of the Syrian Conflict (2020).
More relevant than ever today, given the context.
We see the tension between poor policymaking (particularly the rapid and poorly sequenced lifting of subsidies), external actors such as the IMF and World Bank, which advocated subsidy reform but explicitly recommended a gradual approach, and the tensions within the Syrian establishment between “traditional reformers” and the emerging class of “new businessmen.”

I'm far from convinced there's money for tax cuts any time soon, under any conceivable future government.
But if there is, the priority should be tax cuts that drive growth, not tax cuts that sound nice.
I've a piece on this in the Telegraph: telegraph.co.uk/money/tax/in…
