Just spent some time catching up with an old coworker, who now works at the VP level at a boutique investment bank Was asking him about analyst use of AI and thought his insight was quite fascinating More people are using AI now vs just few months ago, and it absolutely cuts down a lot of time from mundane tasks Just tedious things like arranging logos on a deck or managing a contact log for investors would require analyst resources behind it. Now an Associate or VP with Claude can just do it by themselves with minimal effort However, the work hours have not gone down at all for the analysts. Since senior folks know about the capabilities of AI, they are now staffing analysts across more deals at any given time Not only that, MDs are chasing after new mandates more often than before. Directors are coming up with new tasks for their analysts, like maintaining tear sheets or comp sets on niche verticals. VPs are asking for more pages and trying to show more analysis to clients than before In summary, the duration of any single task has gone down because of AI. However, this has been offset with new work that the firm and group simply never had capacity to do before Instead of reducing hours, it has opened up room for his group to chase after more revenue and provide better/faster work to existing clients. Suspect this is also what is happening across many industries and companies, not just in banking or finance Walked away with the reinforced belief that the entire job loss narrative of AI is just doomerism

Very nice to see ancient/early medieval economic history showing up in ECMA. They show clearly that the Aegean centric world that emerged during the classical period (480-323 BC) still remained as late as the time of Justinian* but was truly shattered over the 7-8th centuries. *In fact you can say it reverted: in the Early Roman Empire, Italy and Northern Africa were part of the "core" but with the decline and fall of the Western Roman Empire, the mediterranean economic system reverted back to being centered on the Aegean as it was in the classical period.
Replying to @johannesmboehm
@johannesmboehm and Chaney combine data on half a million ancient coins with a model of trade and money to reconstruct trade and consumption from AD 325 to 950. The estimates show economic activity shifting away from the Mediterranean from the 6th century. econometricsociety.org/publi…

And just like that… Houston is now a sanctuary city.
I have signed an executive order directing HPD to no longer contact ICE for nonviolent offences, helping reduce fear in our communities. Thank you to Chief Diaz, our state and local leaders for their collaboration. A step toward building a stronger Houston. Let’s Go to Work.

It seems pretty clear to me that Trump fully understood the political consequences of what he was doing but believed he had a historic duty to do it nonetheless.
So the NYT amply confirms the existence of internal polls telling the GOP that the war was sinking them.

The really funny thing, in a tragic comedy sort of way, is that due to inflation gas at $5.50 a gallon today is still cheaper than it was almost the entirety of the Obama Administration.
America trooned out because gas prices went up by $1

US industrial capacity has been eroding for decades, and with it the fortunes of our middle class and to an extent, our national security. Data center development and our leadership in AI can reverse that trend, finally. Current hysteria to block all projects everywhere is a gift to China.

I didn't vote R or D, I'm just amazed Abbott could lose after such a successful gubernatorial tenure, where he unfailingly delivered insane economic growth and made Texas into a powerhouse. It's nuts how people will nuke their own family's prosperity over tribalistic affiliations
