Fun fact: exposed old Roman roads are so common in Syria, there’s a town in Idlib called Raseef (رصيف), named after the 1km of pristinely preserved Roman road that used to connect Aleppo to Antioch. It has been around since Marcus Aurelius’ rule around 170AD
Another remarkable archaeological discovery in #Syria. Recent heavy rains in the Eastern region suddenly exposed a stone-paved surface in Sukhnah desert (E. #Homs), suggesting the remains of an ancient road. Based on the available evidence, 2 types of stones can be distinguished: very smooth, regular slabs - which could also be mistaken for a building's courtyard - and more irregular stones that could indicate later modifications/additions. The smoother paving is certainly consistent with Roman roads found in other parts of Syria. The site is also particularly interesting because it's located close to Qasr Hayr Sharqi, a fortified Umayyad complex featuring 2 palaces with their enclosures, as well as a bathhouse & gardens - in middle of the desert. An aqueduct supplied the complex with water from springs in the Kawm oasis. One possibility is that this Roman road remained in use during the Umayyad period, serving as an access route to the palatial complex. This wouldn't be unusual: structures built before the Islamic period were often reused for centuries. While History often presents the Islamic conquest of Syria as a clear break, archaeology frequently reveals a much greater degree of continuity, with earlier infrastructure & buildings remaining in use long after. Fact few hours of heavy rain could wash away 30 cm of sand and expose such a structure gives you an idea of how much of Syria's ancient heritage still remains buried - just waiting to be discovered.

📌A massive Jordanian security and media failure is unravelling after details about the Karak church attack incident came to light. Do you remember the fake excuse #Jordan used to attack #Syrian territory and kill kids and women in their house while they were sleeping? After Jordan officially backed down from the details of the #Karak_church_attack incident in #Jordan, and hid the names and info of the terrorists because they're Jordanian, and after all the pressure and media mess Jordan went through because it's trying to throw the blame on #Syria any way possible, and under the pressure of Syrian media that exposed the lies and Jordanian contradictions, Jordan went back again to the real story with real details this time: 📌 The attackers are Jordanians and have nothing to do with Syria 📌 They're from a village called Jadida in Karak. They're super extremist terrorists, and everyone knows that, even their relatives have been complaining about them for years. 📌 The village imam, who's a relative of theirs, says they're from the Jordanian Dhenibat clan, and that the three terrorists wouldn't pray behind the villagers because they considered them "infidels" and "apostates." 📌 The imam says he was afraid the day would come when they'd walk into the mosque and kill everyone inside it. 📌 The imam also says, according to his filmed statement to Al Arabiya, that the terrorists wouldn't eat the food or sacrifices of their relatives and the people of the village, and that they didn't differentiate between a church and a mosque, in their eyes, everyone is an infidel. 📌 He said: "The three terrorists used to call Muslims infidels before Christians, and they refused to send their kids to school because of their extremism." ⚠️The important questions here is: - Where was Jordanian intelligence? - Where were the Jordanian security forces? - why did they let things escalate until the Karak church attack happened? - most importantly of all, why did Jordan rush to directly blame Syria, bomb Syrian land, kill a whole family with children, women, and the elderly, and keep pushing the lies they claimed?

The Jordanian attackers who attacked the church (full names are shown) as the Jordanian news agency @RoyaTV published They have nothing to do with Syria and today’s Jordanian attack that killed innocent civilians cannot be justified at all!

Exactly as feared. My instincts have never failed me. This entire thing had ‘farce’ written allover it from the very start. To make it worse, allegedly, it wasn’t even Melania who came up with this idea (I mean, we could’ve guessed that)… it was Putin himself who insisted on it.
Russian forces have begun taking civilians from occupied Oleshky to Russia, apparently disregarding previously announced agreements governing the operation. The operations are being conducted by the Russian military, without American representatives or teams from either side’s ombudsman office present. Russia’s state news agency TASS is openly filming the operation. There is no indication that civilians are being given a choice of where they wish to go. No buses or other vehicles designated to transport evacuees to Ukrainian-controlled territory are visible. The operation raises serious concerns that Russia is once again exploiting a humanitarian evacuation to forcibly transfer Ukrainian civilians. The parallels with the evacuation of Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant are disturbing. Once again, Moscow appears to be disregarding agreed procedures while controlling the fate of Ukrainian civilians.

Turkey's National Intelligence Academy (MİA), which operates under the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), has recently published a report titled The Anatomy of Israeli Expansionism. The report shows that some of Ankara's leading decision makers see Israel as an adversary that needs to be countered, regardless of who is in charge in Tel Aviv. Published in Turkish, the report is an open source that reflects the thinking of some influential pro-government circles in Turkish intelligence and the ruling AKP. It is also the most recent and most detailed public account to date of how Turkish intelligence views Israel. The academy is part of Turkey's intelligence service, MİT, which has gained considerable influence over the country's domestic and foreign policy over the past decade. The report provides a diagnosis. It finds that Israeli politics itself has shifted. In its words, the radical right, once on the margins of the political system, "has settled at the center of Israeli politics," and its growing appeal among younger generations "shows that expansionism will not be limited to a particular leadership." A possible change of government, the report adds, "will not on its own resolve the legal violations on the ground." It then describes the rivalry between Turkey and Israel as a clash between two views of regional order. According to the report, Ankara wants neighbors that are strong and control their own territory, while Israel prefers weak and divided neighbors that allow it to intervene when it chooses. As a result, every gain in Turkish influence limits Israel's freedom of action. The report therefore treats the rivalry as lasting rather than temporary, identifying Syria as the place where the two views clash most directly. It also points to competition in the Eastern Mediterranean, in the Horn of Africa, where Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland, and over trade routes such as the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Based on this diagnosis, the report sets out general principles for Turkey. First, Turkey should not answer every Israeli move in kind. Second, it should not try to replace Israel as the dominant power in the region. Instead, it should help neighboring countries build stronger states and security forces, support closer regional cooperation, and prevent ethnic and religious divisions from inviting foreign intervention. The report then turns to specific countries. On Palestine, Turkey should continue supporting a two-state solution and help protect the land, people, and institutions a future Palestinian state would need. On Lebanon, it should support the country's borders and its government's authority. On Syria, it should help rebuild a central government strong enough to control its own territory. The report also links Israel to Turkey's domestic "Terror-Free Turkey" peace process with the PKK. It argues that better relations among Turks, Kurds, and Arabs would make it harder for Israel to exploit ethnic divisions in the region. Finally, the report looks at the wider region. It warns that regional security could come to depend entirely on networks built around Israel, such as US support, normalization agreements with Arab states, and Israel's integration into US Central Command. Turkey should ensure that no security, energy, or trade arrangement that excludes it becomes the only option. The aim is to prevent Israel from turning its military power and US backing into unlimited freedom of action. The report argues that Israel's aggressive policies make this easier by pushing other countries to seek new partners. One example is the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, which Turkey signed with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in August. According to the report, Turkey's advantage is its ability to work with several partners at once, from NATO to the Gulf states and Pakistan. On trade, it recommends competing with IMEC through Turkey's own routes, the Development Road through Iraq and the Middle Corridor to Central Asia. As the National Intelligence Academy's report argues, a change of leadership in Israel is unlikely to alter its foreign policy. (For Israel, however, a change of leadership in Ankara would make all the difference.) Tensions between Turkey and Israel are therefore likely to persist for the foreseeable future. Syria, where both countries are active and pursue opposing goals, remains the most dangerous arena. Preventing an escalation there will require sustained American engagement with both sides, rather than dismissing the dispute between Turkey and Israel as mere political theater.

New article with @r_aldoughli , in Arabic, in Siyasat Arabiya. We trace how the Assad regime’s bargain with the Alawites, protection for loyalty, wore away during the war (2011–2024). The lesson for post-Assad Syria: no minority is a single bloc.

Most of those think tank guys have gotten extremely attached due to working on Syria for a decade, possibly their entire career at this point, it's also why they were so eager to jump on the "HTS is good now" train even before it was honestly that evident or safe to claim so.
