"Tuition can continue to climb, acceptance rates can continue to plummet, endowments can continue to expand, & adjunct labor can continue as long as the demographics of those paying the tuition & those being exploited continued to get browner"... @Tyler_A_Harper

If you have a second home in New York City worth more than $5M, check your mailbox when you’re back in the five boroughs — because you've got mail. Today, we sent notification letters to property owners, letting them know that our new pied-à-terre tax is coming soon. The best city in the world deserves the best parks, libraries, and schools in the world. That's only possible when we all pay our fair share.

Honored by this great article from my hometown Catholic newspaper! Another kid from my home parish, St. Vincent de Paul--now Father Sam Bellafiore--is featured in the same issue!
In this week's Evangelist, we talk with Albany-born author and professor Kate Ward, whose new book looks at the balance between work and life viewed through a Catholic lens. evangelist.org/news/2026/jul…

Fun fact: you can build your own personal Large Language Model (LLM) inside of your brain by reading more books.

It’s so crazy that if you take away your 9 year olds iPad and give them Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets that kid will be the smartest kid in their grade.
It's time to accept the fact that trying to raise children who read recreationally is about to be like trying to raise opera fans.

"Though the four-hour Mass began in sunlight, clouds slowly gathered and darkened overhead... As the host was consecrated, a torrential downpour fell on the crowd and muddied the hillside while thunder roared and lightning flashed across the sky."
The ultratraditionalist Society of St. Pius X defied Pope Leo XIV by consecrating four bishops without his consent at its seminary in Econe, Switzerland. The move incurs an automatic excommunication for the bishops involved. bit.ly/4wdjC6m

This would be true if the purpose of reading was purely utilitarian. No one is looking at maps for anything other than information; people read for a wide variety of purposes, many of which are contingent on the idea that original thought is involved.
Unfortunately, I think that in the near future, not using LLMs to write for you will be like someone refusing to use Google Maps for directions in a new city. A bizarre idiosyncratic choice that's just completely incomprehensible to the vast majority of people.

I am continually astonished at the number of academic administrators who cannot read a balance book and do not realize that cutting the subjects that cross-subsidize others can never mathematically save them money.
Terrible news from Exeter. The axe is swinging all over the UK for the humanities and social sciences. If we lose these subjects then we will sever a vital link that passes our cultural and social heritage down to the next generation. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2d…

We cannot consider #AI to be morally neutral. In reality, every technical tool embodies choices and priorities through what it measures, ignores, and optimizes, and how it classifies people and situations. Ethical discernment cannot be limited to asking whether we are using a system for good or bad purposes. It must also examine how that system is designed and what vision of the human person and society is embedded in the data and models that guide it. #MagnificaHumanitas

Was just going to post how much I'm enjoying this book and realized the Kindle ed is free (today?) Come for Steve Long's incisive essay on the "Protestant ethic" & Milwaukee sewer socialism, stay for an edited volume whose authors are visibly in conversation &not always agreeing.

Observations in no particular order: - outsource the genuinely delightful work of choosing books for your offspring? srsly? - teachers pay teachers but AI just steals from them - by her own admission, she 👏 isn't 👏 doing 👏 less 👏work! thecut.com/article/jesse-gen…

I realize more and more that a not insignificant part of my Whole Deal (see: Wealth, Virtue and Moral Luck) comes from growing up with a New York Mag subscription.
