Jodrell Bank is the most visible causality of UKRI’s short sighted ‘vision’ for science, but as you’ll see below, there are many other valuable UK facilities and collaborations at risk. We became aware of the problem in the autumn of last year. It is not a result of the overall funding settlement for science after the spending review, which was quite generous I would say in the circumstances. Neither as far as we can tell is it a direct decision by ministers (all of whom have now gone in any case). Rather the problems appears to have been caused by senior management at UKRI focusing on short term economic ‘impact’ (whatever that means) rather than doing their job as custodians of the foundations of science. What must happen now is that the new ministerial team make the time (and space ;-)) to review the upcoming catastrophe, and instruct UKRI to do their job and focus on making Britain the best place in the world to do science, now and in the future.
The announced closure of the UK's largest telescope at Jodrell Bank is only a small part of the cuts in UK physics

Wait wait dont tell me.... 1) It gets mothballed for 10 years 2) It will be discovered by someone that it was actually a very good thing for Britain to have 3) It will be discovered that when it was shut everything has been corroded and nobody can remember how the software works 4) It will be scrapped 5) A new one will be built in its place for 100x the cost of just maintaining the old one for another 50 years.

Lots of attention on the 'exploitation of international doctors' in @uhbtrust The problem a lot of you in power have is not listening to red flags -when it is raised And I keep saying how IMGs are being exploited by all and sundry- across the NHS Look at the date on the tweet. I repeat. ALL such schemes should be shut down / paused until fraud and exploitation excluded. ALL. Inclusive of those facilitated by @RCPhysicians @NHSE_WTE @NHSEngland et al @wesstreeting @DHSCgovuk @bmj_latest @RaoMala @gmcuk @tcgannon @NHSEmployers @sas_sobauk
In 2023 Some body oked the fact that human beings could work as doctors but not get maternity pay. Because they came from “another country” Via a scheme of @AoMRC More news @uhbtrust re doctors. Btw, use the hashtag #BeKind for all- yeah? thetimes.co.uk/article/a4310…

Do you use a bougie for your hyperangulated VL (HAVL) intubations? 👀 We just published a side-by-side comparison of five intubation adjuncts for HAVL in a simulated difficult airway. Read it and you might consider changing your practice. associationofanaesthetists-p…
Great to see this published in @Anaes_Journal TLDR - Stylets best for hyperangulated VL intubation Dynamic bougies next best Standard bougies worst Effects more marked when difficulty increases Manikin studies are often criticised, but may in some cases be the optimal design. There is a weakness of most clinical studies: even in 'high risk' or 'predicted difficult' cohorts most (>80%) intubations are simple so don't stress test the technique. This creates a false reassurance in results. We used a specific difficult intubation manikin from @LimbsandThings1 It enabled us to set up a reproducible - straight forward HAVL intubation - genuinely difficult one (tricky 2b view) So we really did stress the technique.... We studied -Storz C-MAC Stylet (@KARLSTORZUK) -Universal Stylet Bougie (@intersurgical) -Total Control Introducer (@RunnelsSean) -Steerable Tracheal Intubation Guide (@LateralMedical) -Portex Single-Use Bougie 30 participants (familiar with D-blade use) intubated the manikin with each adjunct (after familiarisation, random order) in the easy and difficult set-up (again randomised) Clear separation of performance -Stylets best (excellent) -Dynamic bougies next best (still good) -Standard bougie worst (poor) When the chips are down the separation of performance was increased -stylet FPS close to 100% -bougie performance close to 35% Success rate, time, effort, VRS scores all support these findings. Don't get fooled into thinking bougies work well with HAVL by studies that don't stress test the technique. Don't get stuck with the wrong tool! Well done to all the staff at @RUHAnaesthesia who did the study or participated & @VirtueOfNothing associationofanaesthetists-p…
