50% of US data centers are being delayed or canceled. 17% are uncertain. Only 33% are actually being built. This what's driving AI compute into orbit.

Google's ex-CEO Eric Schmidt talks about how his whole early life was basically coding, and how AI just wiped it out. He says in his 20s all he wanted to do was write programs, all the way through college and grad school, and that this is what built his career. But now, every single thing he learned back then can be done by AI. "Each and every one of you has a supercomputer and superprogrammer in your pocket." --- From 'Institute of Politics Harvard Kennedy School' YT channel

"The most important thing in the next 3-4 years is data centers in space. In every way, data centers in space, from a first principles perspective, are superior to data centers on earth. In space, you can keep a satellite in the sun 24 hours a day. The sun is 30% more intense, which results in six times more irradiance than on Earth. So you don't need a battery. The cooling in these data centers is incredibly complicated. Space cooling is free. You just put a radiator on the dark side of the satellite. The only thing faster than a laser going through a fiber optic cable is a laser going through absolute vacuum. Link satellites with lasers, and you have a faster and more coherent network than any data center on Earth."
This is my fifth conversation with @GavinSBaker. Gavin understands semiconductors and AI as well as anyone I know and has a gift for making sense of the industry's complexity and nuance. We discuss: - Nvidia vs Google (GPUs + TPUs) - Scaling laws and reasoning models - The economics of AI compute - Why Blackwell's delay mattered - The bear case on the AI capex buildout - Data centers in space - The mistake SaaS companies are making Few people love investing more than Gavin. His closing answer about why he loves it turned into a full reflection on his investing origin story, which I had never heard before. Enjoy! Weird posts all day about software errors (accidental or not) and how they can cancel each other. I spent 20 years finding/classifying software faults and failures in millions of lines of code and never saw any evidence of this. Where did this idea come from? I’m skeptical.

I think it infinitely inferior to my own Flat Universe theory, in which instead of a Big Bang, everything came into existence when God slid the universe under a door.
Replying to @neilhimself
Neil Gaiman, what do you think about the "Flat Earth" theory?

SOS website now says ballot mailed. Haven’t seen it yet. According to @rjomartin Fulton cty never rejects applications. Will it arrive & be correct? Will it be counted? It’s like reading Tom Swift novels when I was 10 yrs old. Voting shouldn’t be exciting like Tom Swift novels.
Well it's three days and counting. Emailed my absentee ballot application, but the SOS My Voter page doesn't show my application received or approved yet. I live in Fulton County. Do you think the Director of Elections is giving me personal attention? Nahh...neither do I.
