We Sailors 🚢 We last sailed together in 2007. We've met only once since. Today, one message from him brought the whole ship back. Early 2000s. I was a newly promoted Chief Officer, somewhere in my mid-20s. Young. Beaming with energy. Youthful exuberance and arrogance in equal measure. I wasn't good at my work. I was very, very good. And humility wasn't troubling me much. I was the ship. The ship was me. हाथ पकड़ना तो दूर, नाखून छू के बताओ। That was me. Rotterdam, Hamburg, Newark: the cargo surveyors there had reputations that arrived before they did. They came aboard to find problems, especially with dangerous goods. I used to make them sweat. And yes, I was cocky about it. I thought I was untouchable. Then M joined as Second Officer. I was his senior. I wanted him to meet my standards. Little did I know how much this man would teach me about life and the sea. We reached a tactical understanding. He never called me at 4 am. I made sure he never had to keep a cargo watch he didn't want. The sailors reading this will understand. 😂 Brothers in crime. Different mothers. Three ships back to back, much of the same crew. Somewhere along the way, we became a family. After berthing, my maximum intervention was a "tik tik" on the walkie-talkie. The crew knew. My officers knew. The cadets could tell from one glance what the C/O wanted. There is a rare happiness in working with people who understand you without a sentence being spoken. I had that. I never found it again. I have never felt happier or more content. That's a fact. Of course, we had our moments. One European port. M and me. Out drinking. Absolutely, gloriously drunk. "Forget the ship. Let's have fun." For perspective: Chief Mate and Second Officer. The agent eventually tracked us down and dumped us into a pilot boat. How we got back aboard remains a gap in my otherwise excellent professional memory. 🚢 That was life. A crew from heaven. Relationships cast in stone. @ZimShipping #ofer you gave me those years and those people. You helped make me who I am, and you taught me that a spine is meant to be used. I was senior to M in rank, and he was a much, much older hardened seadog. But he taught me about Sea Life. I hope peace prevails and I can go back to Israel. Sit with my brother. Have a drink. Remember who we were. We Sailors. We Brothers. ⚓
